So because my school district happens to be very redneck, I've managed to convince the administration to allow me to start up an airsoft club for the purpose of increasing the amount of players in the area. I'm assuming this is something that has been done on VERY few occasions, so how should I go about running the first meeting. Obviously I'm going to attract a lot of new players to our sport so first thing I am going to cover is the safety aspects and the proper use of full seal eye protection. But beyond that How should I open the meeting to grab interest and how should I close it to maintain interest.
How do I introduce new players to what "Michigan Airsoft" really is beyond just sending them to the forums?

Well, anything like that (especially with younger guys) should start with safety. Safety. Safety. Safety. Don't stop drilling it into them until they know gun safety backwards and forwards, and forwards and backwards again. We don't want another "kid with airsoft gun shot" incident, and especially not someone from these forums, nor MI itself.

Yeah this first thing they need to learn other than proper eye protection is to not play airsoft on public land or anywhere that can be seen by people for that matter.

Take safety a bit slow but not to slow to where it's boring and try and get people out to play even if it's only backyard kind of airsoft pretty quickly. Make safety go before game time though.

Hmmm, Start of with a short exciting video introducing them to airsoft then cover the safety issues the rest of the meeting, end it with another video?

Show them the videos here when you get the chance: www.lionclawsfilms.com/northern_light.html It was from the past lion claws Northern Light event which was held right here in Michigan.

I'm going to be Captain Obvious here but I hope you stress to the members of this club that they do not bring any airsoft guns or gear for that matter on school property. Not even in the trunk of their cars. I understand schools have paintball clubs as well. My University had one.

I would hope people in my school are not as brain dead as I think they are.

Grab them by appealing to the deeper internal interest of it. Basically express how the imagination, like all things really, is what makes airsoft so much fun and explain different types of ways to go about it; not just "team deathmatch" and "capture the flag", I mean the other aspects like re-enacting a time in history or how you can make up your own situations, teams, etc. and play those scenarios out. Even include an actually sweet story of your own you've had from airsoft or someone elses' on here that would benefit the meeting from sharing.

After a few weeks, when your initial membership is enrolled you should consider bringing in a real firearms safety instructor as a guest speaker. Someone who does hunters safety or cpl classes. This will make your club seem more legit for school admin, help cover some legal bases, and be generally good for the fellow members. You may also want to contact the school paper for advertising purposes and to make it known what your club is about before some parent comes in complaining about their kids obsession with guns and shooting people.
Honestly this sounds really cool, but it worries the hell out of me; redneck community or not.

Show some examples of some really elaborate and great looking guns as well. Show them how customizable these guns are so that they can make their gun fit their style. Maybe for the safety part, get a slideshow where you have two pictures next to each other, one airsoft, the other real steel, and have them guess which is real to let them know that these CAN be mistaken for the real thing.

Having some issues with that video, If I pause it to let it buffer it just restarts and won't load.

I like that last part. This seems like it could go one of two ways; you'll get more people into the sport who genuinely enjoy it and want to grow, or you'll get kids who just plink in their backyard, and shoot the neighbors cat, and their parents get pissed and come after the club. Like was stated many times, safety is huge, once that's established show some Lions Claws videos (Irene III is the reason I got into the sport), and show some impressions that people have put together. I like the idea of bringing in an actual gun safety instructor, maybe even get your schools liaison police officer involved to iterate the consequences of poor choices with replicas. Good luck!
