I have a random plain Jane Mich 2001 I picked up from a guy. It is a real one, not a repro. I'm a little new to the realm of helmets, so I have a few questions. If I wanted to attach rails/ mounts to my helmet, how would I go about that? I would hope I don't have do anything drastic. Second, velcro. Is there any good brands that hold up nice and don't fray? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Rails and mounts just bolt on to either the NVG mount holes or the holes for the suspension system. What specific kinds of stuff you can mount to it will depend on the hole pattern that is pre drilled into the helmet. Pics of the helmet and the manufacturer label would be helpful. Also check out supplycaptain for adhesive velcro.
I don't know how much you paid for the helmet already but I say since it's a real helmet you might as well put real accessories on it, which can be expensive depending on what you choose. Let us know what you are interested in and what you want out of it and we can help you better.

I agree, don't skimp out when you got the real deal helmet. And I just happen to have 2 brand new USGI rhino mounts still in the package. I also sent you a PM.

I am not interested in the rhino mounts right now as much as rails on the side. It does not have holes drilled into it for mounting, so will I have yo go with a strap system? I can provide pics later, my internet connection won't support uploads right now.

There has to be holes drilled for the chinstraps, no? ARC rails attach through those same holes. Also, what do you want rails for? Just to look cool? They really aren't worth adding just for one or two little things IMO. I can tell right now that it will look funky with just rails and no NVG mount. If there is no NVG mout holes drilled then aside from drilling your helmet the only option would be a strap type mount.
What does the tag on the inside of the helmet say?

Rails for a contour. Yes, there are holes for a chinstrap. I'm not at home, but I do remember the tag said something like "vehicle gunner helmet". Sorry, I'm not much help right now.

What you probably have is a CVC and not a 2001.

So what is the difference between a CVC and a 2001? They look pretty much the same to me, But I'm no helmet expert.

The CVC has a higher and more rounded cut than a 2001, which, more or less, is a 2000 with the ear cups cut off.

A picture of the helmet would be helpful in identifying what you should, or are able to put on it.

So was I ripped off for $20? And now that I know what kind of helmet it is, am I going to have to use a strap system or a mounted system?
