The day was September 15th.... Operation Jackal II. My squad had been tasked with protecting our commanding officer. Our CO Shane was a take charge kind of guy, he didn't like to be stuck behind a desk, he would much rather be in the trenches with the soldiers and risking himself to lead by example. Our men loved him.
We were on our way back from establishing an over-watch position on a hillside a little ways away from the Rebel HQ. Along with us was my close friend Ares, Dylan and a few other men. We moved quickly through the woods, we had just kicked the hornets nest and wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. We could here the crackle of the AEG's behind us, but we moved quickly and soon, they faded. Shane led our squad to a the edge of clearing in the forest. We stopped, gathered ourselves and reloaded. I checked my gear, I was low on Ammo, but we were almost home free. We moved through the clearing next to a sand bag wall.... We never saw the SAW gunner.
Faster than we could blink, BB's were wiz zing past our head, almost immediately Ares and I dove into cover. We were pinned down, Dylan was hit and bleeding our CO had taken off with the rest of our squad.
"Shit, I said to Ares, this was a great time to walk into a fucking ambush, do you know how many rebels are on that hillside?
"No more than 3" Ares shouted "My battery is out, do you have a spare? We need to make a fighting retreat into that forest, Once my gun is up again I'll cover you"
I handed him my spare nun-chuck battery, but I wasn't prepare for what happened next. While Ares was loading the battery into his AEG, I popped up to give him some covering fire. I heard someone yell hit. Then I ran out of ammo.
"Well I relieved some of the pressure on us but I'm out of ammo, can you spare a mag? I shouted while BB's whizzed past my head"
"I can't spare the mag right now my gun is on fire! What the Hell"
While putting in the battery, a wire was cut and was Arcing, causing the handgaurd to smoke and the connectors to melt. We were trapped behind enemy lines with no ammo, one working gun, and a fire hazard we had to deal with. I popped up, dry-fireing to keep the advancing rebels heads down. We had to get out of there, more were approaching from the east, the people were were just fighting 10 minutes earlier, hungry for revenge. We couldn't stay there, I slung my M4 on my back and switched to my M9, I had two mags, I had to make them count, I fired off a mag, "Hit, Hit" I had taken out two of the rebels advancing from the east, Ares and I ran for the woods, firing our sidearms as we ran. We made it back to HQ. Shane was there.
He asked, "Where did you two go?"
"Hell, we replied, and we brought most of them down with us"
