Hi guys. I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Mike I'm 22 I'm a SGT in the Michigan Nation Guard as a 88M. I am currently deployed overseas. I was looking at getting into paintball when i got home, as i have done a couple of paintball games including the tippman challenge at Hell Survivor last year using all borrowed gear from a friend though, but the price of paint and the gear and the lack of realism stopped me from really getting into the sport. Then a battle buddy of mine told me about airsoft, and I'm really looking forward to diving into this hobby head first so to speak. The only thing i am curious about is becoming a member of a team. I am hopping to find and join a team that is really dedicated to the sport and does more than just a couple of weekend skirmishes and that's it. I'm looking more for a group of guys that gets together on a regular biases, once or twice a week to go over tatics and just kick back and "shoot the s*!@", has a dedicated uniform that is some what organized and professional looking, and is willing to travel to events out of state. I'm really looking forward to getting home and getting started in this hobby. And i almost forgot back in Michigan i reside in Howell.

Thank you for your service and welcome to MIA.
Paintball is fun but I'd have to say that airsoft tops it by a lot but I'm biased. Check out the events thread for games near Howell when you get back. You will likely see games in Taylor and in Ypsilanti. There are also a lot of games that happen on the west side of the state. If you can make it out to those games, let us know. I'd certainly be interested in showing you the ropes and introducing you to the MIA players around here.
When are you coming back to town?

I am due to come home in a couple of months. End of Nov. beginning of Dec. time frame.
I had a lot of fun playing paintball and all but using unit tactics and attacking as a team or squad element seems to go out the window especially because there are so many younger kinds who just go out and just spray and pray. Also I'm a sucker for tac gear and using tac gear and paintball just don't mix.
Question: I'm looking at getting the King Arms Colt M4A1 GBB, but is the hassle of a GBB worth the little extra realism it provides or would i just be better off getting a AEG?

GBB's are definitely worth it and I would point you towards the KJW M4. I currently own 2 and have another one on the way. Unfortunately the major drawback to GBB's is that they don't work well in the cold weather. The ideal temperature for GBB's is around 60 degrees I believe.
If you are planning on just playing indoors for the winter then you shouldn't have a problem with just getting a GBB but if you plan on going to a game outdoors during the winter then you'll have to pick up an AEG as well.

Are there a lot of outdoor games in the winter. Or does everyone move indoors for the most part? And is their any place that i would be able to test out some rifles before committing to a purchase?

Winter games do happen but they are not as common. You'd have to consider though that almost half the year in Michigan will be under 60 degrees outside. The good thing is we have a variety of indoor places to play in metro Detroit.
There isn't a place where you can test out rifles beforehand but I'm sure that if you make it out to a game that people would be happy to let you test fire their guns.

If you want realism, you definitively would want to go for a KWA LM4 GBB. A bit more like a PTW than other GBBs, although I have heard the accuracy is a little short. Plus, you can fire upside down in-case you ever find yourself in that situation. Also, it's more fieldable in the winter so to say. Granted, you may have to do some tricks to get around mag temp (Hand-warmers in a double mag pouch with propylene?).
If you go for an AEG, G&G's usually make a pretty solid gun, and I here good things from their full metal line.
GBB's are usually more realistic (Celcius/Systema PTW...) so to speak since it has recoil and a bolt, but the mags are much more pricey, and you can't field it in the winter unless you modify it. AEG's are usually cheaper than GBB's (At least, the lower/moderate lines), their magazines are cheaper and can be usually interused with other brand guns (Share mags!), and are fieldable in any weather (Cold weather will lower performance due to physics or something). Side-note, if you use propane (Cheaper by far), it will smell.
Cheers!
E-Dit: If you really want the realism, you'd want a Polar Star (Or PTW by Systema or Celcius). It uses HPA tanks that can fit in something as small as a general pouch (So I am told), and it works in any condition. Granted, they are expensive to build up, but hey. In airsoft, you get what you pay for. If you ever have any questions about gun choice or gear, definitively ask. Most of us here can guide you in the right direction. That goes to say, WE-Tech is not the best choice for pistols.

When I think of realism, polar stars do not come to mind unless they are building RS weapons these days with a hose and a tank that you have to wear on your back.
I almost feel like those things are a step back to paintball.

I almost feel like those things are a step back to paintball. More like a step back to classics. Which in my opinion is a great thing for performance just no so much for realism.

Yeah in terms of performance, those things are amazing. I just can't get past the hose and tank.

I almost feel like those things are a step back to paintball. I 100% agree with all of the above. If you are looking for realism there are a couple options... 1) SystemA (AEG) - Realistic Externals (dimensions/finish) also has some part compatibility with Real Steel. Stupid Expensive. Celsius is a Chinese(?) clone of the the SystemA. 2) G&P (AEG) - Realistic externals, some say they have mediocre internals (prone to failure). 3) GBB - Realistic Action probably decent externals based on brand. I can't add much here because I don't have any first hand experience with GBBs. Polarstar is going the opposite direction of realism. I personally use a KWA. Mainly because they were reviewed as being being the best shit ever when they first came out. They are a good option, but it's not like they revolutionized anything. Tokyo Marui designed the gearbox that basically every company uses inside AEGs (except SystemA/Celsius). As such, for most of the older members they are the gold standard. They aren't very realistic (plastic receivers), but they have awesome performance. Hopefully that provides some insight, I could go on for entirely too long about all of the details, but I should just stop...

Well thank you for the info guys. I did make my first purchase today, I bought the KWA Full Metal MK23 US SOCOM. I figured that being that i my self am a big guy (6'5 210), I'll be able to put the offensive design of the MK23 to good use on an indoor course. Then as i get more into it and am around the guns and get a feel for the game ill be able to make a better informed decision.
Here is a link to the pistol. What are you thoughts on it? (http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=139_25_63&products_id=8642)

You'll love that KWA, Mike. Nice seeing you on the boards too dude. When you get back to Howell from your deployment I'd be more than happy to help guide you on your airsoft noob adventure.
