I'm considering getting a rifle for a DMR role, but no idea what to get. I'm thinking about an M14 so I can go for an M21ish look. If you want to suggest something go ahead, however, what do you think is a good brand for an m14 that isn't too pricy?
Only requirements I have are: Must be able to have a scope No AR systems Must be able to have a bipod

I've got to echo what Alex stated. DMRs, especially AEG DMRs, are prohibitively expensive and require a significant amount of know-how to build, tune and maintain.
First off, what are you considering a "DMR?"
Are you just wanting a DMR looking rifle with a scope or other magnified optic that fires around 400 FPS?
Or
are you wanting to build something that actually looks like a DMR and also functions like one (450-550 FPS semi-auto only)?
If you want to do the former, then just pick a rifle you want, drop an M120 (or thereabouts) into it and put a scope on it. If you want to do the later, you'll need a bit more expertise and AEG-building know-how.

Any consistent gun with a prommy and R hop= instant dmr.

G&G M14 all the way. No Cyma or SOCOM crap will stand up to the stresses of DMR use.

Depending on how tech savy you are I would steer away from a v7 gearbox. I would suggest a P90. It has a v6 gearbox. M4 mag converter and is a short weapon with a relatively long barrel.

A P90 doesn't make a good dmr. People have tried, even with tons of upgrades they don't get crazy range. From what I've heard it's something with the hopup design.
Edit. Plus a P90 is more of a pdw IMO.

However I don't know exactly which upgrades he did to his TM P90.

Any AEG can function as a DMR with enough time and money, but not all AEGs will look like a proper DMR.
P90s are pretty cool, and I've owned one, but I don't think the OP is looking for a PDW to build into a DMR. It seems like he wants a rifle-style AEG (M14, G36KE, etc) to upgrade in imitation of a real-world DMR.
DMR = Designated Marksman Rifle.

I'm not going to be in the market for a while since I JUST bought my first AEG, but I really had my eyes on the Ares M14 sopmod as a DMR for a second rifle down the line. Either that or an L86.

The beauty of airsoft is anything can be anything. Plus the best dmr is the dmr no one expects. Also, their are ways to get around the limitations of the hop up. Looks at AR variants. They have one of the worst hop up designs and yet people make DMRs out of them all the time.

I'm speaking from lots of research on P90's, they don't make a good DM rifle. The OP clearly stated he wants to build a rifle with a scope and bipod, both of those on a P90 would be utter disgusting. Why don't you make a Thompson DMR and prove my wrong? At this point it seems you are more of a butcher than airsoft tech.

I'm a fairly decent tech... in fact because its so difficult to build a p90/Thompson DMR I'll let you know my Thompson can effectively hit 180ft at 360 fps and 30rps... because only a M4 can be used as a base gun. *Rolls eyes*

Enough ladies, the OP probably doesn't want his thread to turn into a flamefest, so let's just take it down a notch. Making a guess on the OP, since he says his eyes were on an M14, I would tend to think he would rather have a full length, actual DMR-style rifle. Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe an M14 would make a fine DMR, as a matter of fact it's one of the most common DMRs I see on this board. Another option would be an SR25, or perhaps an AUG. There are lots of possibilities, like previously stated, this is airsoft, practically anything can be made to shoot like a DMR with any amount of work. It's all about what you like the look and feel of. Try asking to hold a few different DMR platforms at a game (I'm sure we'd be happy to let you) to see what you like the feel of. Make your decision based on that.
