Hi everyone! I'm a thirteen year old (soon to be fourteen) living in Grand Rapids. Last year, I got an Echo 1 MP5A4 as a gift. Recently I've been wanting to get into airsoft. I know there are many recreational events. However, I'm not sure if there is an age requirement for these, and also, do people around my age usually go to these events? Thank you.

Hi,
First of all welcome and thank you for writing a cohesive first post. There are a lot of rec games, the age requirements vary with each host/venue but most rec games are 16 and under friendly. You will be required to wear full face protection such as a paintball mask at most events I would think, and you need a waiver signed by a parent/guardian. Other than that you should be good to go for most REC events. You don't need a lot of trick gear or anything for these, jeans and a hoodie will do they're great for starting out and getting to know people in the sport. Some venues will do 16 and under only events sometimes.
A great thing I'd advise is to keep an eye on the Events section here on these boards for REC games near you. The hosts will typically post the time, location, cost and rules/requirements on here for everyone to plan on coming out. It is a very big help.
Good luck, and I hope you are able to sling some plastic soon and enjoy yourself!

(Preferably not too expensive)

You may want to look into a two piece face mask. Such as goggles and a ironface/mesh lower half. This will allow you to decide you if you want to have full face or not . Although not always considered full face I would say 95% of the time is and full face is not alway required it depends on the host of the event.
My opinion on some good goggles would be Flak Jak, you can find them on evike for $30 and they work great for being cheap. I have experienced no fog with mine so far and they are very comfortable.
As far ar the Iron face you could find that on evike also. I believe they cost about $15 but I would suggest the Matrix mesh lower face cover over the iron face. That will cost you a little more at about $25
Hoped this helped and trust me those goggles are worth every dollar you pay for them

Do you guys think this kind of magazine is worth it? It's a high cap dual magazine: www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_56_440&products_id=25477I want an extra magazine so I don't end up without ammo while playing, and this would save some money.

That will work with your gun if you are going for a winding Hi-cap. I personally dont care for those types as I use Mid-caps. Mid-caps add to the realness of the game and you do not every so many shots have to stop to wind or shake the mag. Mid-caps for MP5s are around 95rd give or take depending on brand. Also some games mostley MILSIMs dont allow or limit Hi-cap mags. On top of that Mid-caps will feed into your gun more smoothley. Mid-caps = mag that will hold 50 (give or take) to 160 rounds Mid-caps I would recommend: www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_56_440&products_id=30451those would get the job done

^^^ I recommend the above mags as well. Just for the record, Flakjaks can be bought at www.goggleoverstock.com/index.html for about $20. Less if you want to bid for them on Ebay. If you want to use an Iron Face ($8 on Evike), I would recommend drilling some more holes in a closer area, but still some width between them. It does help with anti-fogging on pretty much everything (Or get the mesh mask and never worry about it ever). If you still want to go full face mask, I would recommend a Save Phace mask. Pretty expensive (50-60?), but they are probably the best for the job.

I swear there was a rule that you had to have a parent/guardian accompany players under 16 years old. That has kept me away from most REC games since my parents would never want to go to an airsoft game. Also, If I'm under 16 could I wear a Flakjak/shemagh combination? I don't exactly have a full face mask...but then again I don't plan on playing CQB at all.

^Rules are at the discretion of the event host, not a universal Michigan policy.

Have you tried to get your folks to go to a game? Almost any event host in MI would love to see parents there, and it would give them a chance to actually be involved in your life. My daughter's about your age and we're generally pretty stoked when she tells us she actually wants us around for something.

Thanks to everyone that has helped me out. We just ordered some extra mags, BBs, and the iron face with the FlakJak. (Good thing I got good grades on my report card ) You guys said that in most events, an adult will have to accompany me? If that is the case, will we have to buy another gun or will there guns to rent there in most cases? I would love to go in with my dad but I don't think they are going to end up spending another hundred or so dollars

A lot depends on the event and the hosting organization. When asking for a loaner or renter, make sure to specify that it's so your dad can play with you. That's a little extra motivation for someone to help out - getting parents to support this hobby is the best possible way to grow it. I'm on the other side of the state, but if the event was near Ann Arbor, you'd be welcome to stop by and borrow something.
Also, thanks for giving the lie to our usual stereotypes about kids by posting so well. I really hope there's a way to make all this work.

When we receive the equipment from Evike, I'm going to start looking around for events. Hopefully I can find one with rentals so my dad can join in. Once again, thanks to everyone that has helped me get started. ;D

I know for a fact you can play at Bangor without a parent, all you need is a parents signature on a waiver.
