Actually I used my laser instead of looking down the sights a lot of the time. Laser's are so useful.

I don't think expanding gas really cares if it goes up or down. It would function the same. The tube doesn't really look like anything else.

Generally, the bolt and gas system is above the barrel (Bolt being in the cycling area) because that's where the bullets are. The reason being is that having a very hot pipe near your hands is not very good for them.

Fair enough. I think in actuality the tube below the barrel is just an artist making it look cool since it's a fictional weapon. A light there would look goofy in my opinion.

The gas tube on an M14 goes under the barrel doesn't it? I would guess that is where they designed the gas tube on it.

Plus it's a video game. Be happy they made it realistic enough to have a gas tube in the first place.

Fair point Blitz.
If you add a removable plug over it, you could obtain both the appearance and the functionality of it.
Although you are jury rigging your own mags and probably the feeding system, I feel like a VSR-10 style magazine, just bigger, would fit the bill quite nicely if my Halo 3 memories are correct.

I also thought gas tube at first, but it goes out well past the last point of where it connects to the barrel, which would be pointless in a real gun. Everything else about the design makes sense from either a function or manufacturing standpoint (I've spent a lot of time figuring out every detail of the design over the last week), so the only other thing I can think of is a small flashlight (15mm OD, at least from what my CAD says). It's the future, so of course they could pull it off. I suppose it could be both, though, so I want to have wires going through the tube to a threaded end, and have the ability to either thread a small bulb assembly or plug onto the end. I think I should be able to buy a pen light, replace the LED with a high-intensity LED, just use the tip, and have the batterys inside the body & switch built in somewhere easily accessible to a hand. Sorry for not explaining my thoughts so well the first time, but if you see problems with the idea or thoughts please let me know!

Here's my current revision of the 2d wire mesh, along with (from what I can tell from in-game animations) the magazine. It looks like a VSR-10 style would look good when loaded into the gun, as well as be MUCH easier to carry spares, but the only issue I can see it bringing the BB's up to the piston, because while I can only see a frame or two of the internal part of the mag, the large bottom "L" shaped part of it is definitely part of the mag and I feel like if I went with the VSR-10 style, then that's what it would be.

Expand the mag to fill the L part to make carrying extras easier, though how long would it make the mags?

Never thought the mags were that long XD. If you are going to rig up something with a regular mid-cap, I would recommend a G3, M14, Tokyo Marui FAMAS, SR25/Nam era M16 mag. Those are all pretty much the same shape, and you could add the little L shaped base plate.

Sorry to Necro I just wanted to see how you are progressing as I will be doing a similar project with a G36 to make it like John 'Reaper' Grimm from DOOM
