So, I'm working on converting my stock M4's front to a free float, and since the battery compartment is normally in the handguard, this will present an issue. Of course, I could just throw the battery into a PEQ box, but that would look bad with the flashlight I plan on putting on the rail. So, I've had an idea floating around in my head for a while. The rail system I plan on buying is a 12 inch Noveske free-float, which gives a considerable amount of space between itself and the outer barrel. Would it be possible to fit a 9.6v NiMh or 7.4v LiPo stick type battery in there, without anything externally?

You're going to run into issues when you actually want to put the battery in. 7.4 Lipos can fit into a lot of places, but I don't think you want to have to take your rail off every time you put the battery in.
Try running a PEQ 16 on the top of your current rail. That might mesh better with your flashlight aesthetically speaking.

Well, the front of it is open, I was hoping I could slide it in through there and connect the battery through the gaps.

Yeah but when you tilt your gun down the battery moves and could fall off/have wire issues.

Or wire the gun to the rear. That's easy enough.

Yeah forget the front wiring. Put a crane stock on it, and run the wiring back there. Works out awesome. CA makes a crane stock that can hold some pretty large batteries. I think it's a little bit if a pain the way you have to put the batteries in, but once they are in, you are golden. Personally I love the crane stock that came on my KWA, but they limit you to smaller, long and thin, LiPo batteries.

CA Crane stock is stupid expensive too. I own one. I only bought it because it can fit Sub-C cells. I would still recommend wiring to rear though.

My god they are, I have a junky tan Crane stock on now that doesn't slide at all on my buffer tube, I don't know how well it'd hold a battery.

If you're planning on running a 12" Noveske Rail, I think a nice crane stock to hold the battery isn't going to break you. 100 for a stock seems like a lot but if you want to run a nice setup, it is what it is. Save up some more, and do it right the first time, trust me you'll save a lot in the long run.

Alright, I probably will end up wiring it to the rear. I have a guy that would do it for me for $50, but how simple is it, exactly, to wire it to the rear?

Uhh it's about as complicated as air-smithing gets. Not that hard really. Can you work a soldering iron? Can you assemble a gearbox from scratch? If so, do it yourself. If not do it yourself and learn. If you would rather never know anything about airsoft guns then have someone else do it.

To answer your questions, yes, and hell no. I actually want to get a junk Version 2 just to toy with and get the hang of, so I know what everything does. Is there any good guide on how to rear wire a gun?
