Plus you can brag if you get a pistol kill. Hard to brag with AEG kills! This! Plus its that much more embarrassing to the guy you shot with a single well placed shot from yer sidearm when he was just unloading on you. I can't count how many times at SFOD games I dropped my m14 and stormed the city with just my 1911 (and my TM Desert Eagle back in the old days) and got kills up the ass cause its small, easy to manuever with and the delay it would take for the gearbox to wind up and shoot is taken out of the equation.

So far my track record has been higher with my pistol on the field as well. They're a lot of fun to use.

While I have not played any open field games, and have only done CQB in my limited playtime, I fully recommend a sidearm.
In CQB, I have found my pistol to be the single most useful item in my kit. I run a Raider M4, and have a lot of fun with it, but in tight corners, or storming a house, it is far too big and clumsy for me to get my sights on target quickly compared to my M1911.
My sidearm on the other hand allows me to switch from very aggressive covering fire and keeping heads down, to very quick movement and stealth. In the limited time I've used my 1911, I've gotten far more bang kills with it, then I have kills with my M4 total. I chock this up to being able to quickly and quietly move through a building without a large gun barrel getting in the way, and having a compact weapon.
Another amazing benefit to a sidearm, especially GBB, is when the battery on your AEG dies, and you are silly enough to not have a spare, you still have a functional weapon, albeit limited in what you can hit.
Keep in mind, these are opinions from a CQB player, You need to consider your play style and think "Will I use this?".
Or do what I did, and buy one because its just plain cool, and fun to toy with, and then make it work in your kit. ;D

I would get a sidearm, they just come in handy too often. If you don't want to spend a lot, then go with something like the CO2 H&K USP. My buddy bought one last year, and after getting all of his GBB 1911s it is still his favorite.

I second Knief. Even if you don't use it that often, it's still worth it to have one. As for price, look around on the commerce section, I've seen some VERY good deals on some good ones. As for brand, try to stay away from WE, that's probably my best advice. Check this guide, it should help you in choosing: miairsoft.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gas&action=display&thread=31331

I think you're all missing the point. GBBs are fun as fuck. Who cares how often you need draw it (that obviously varies from person to person), they're a lot of fun to play around with. If you want to use it and you have one, you're all set. If you don't have one, you never get to use one. Agreed. I don't know where everyone plays, but for me, it's not always on commercial fields. The group I play with (way up in the U.P.) plays on some private property, and our numbers are not always consistant from time to time, so if we only have 10 guys show up, sometimes we'll do a pistol only game to bring everyone closer together.

We used to run pistol only games back at the SEMIA Monthlies. They were some of the most fun every weekend. I wish more people came prepared with sidearms to make them work at our current rec games.

Well, that was a lot of opinions. I have a SCAR H which is rather long and is 7.3 pounds (with attachments). It's also waaaaay over the CQB FPS limits. The only reason for the DE is that it's the cheapest GBB on EhobbyAsia (I can't stand non blowbacks). I've personally fired a Taurus pistol (HATED the gun) and a KWA m93r (AWESOME!!!). But back to the point, I think it's a good idea to get a pistol, but at the same time I can't justify dropping $100 on a sidearm*. I still need more magazines, gear, etc. (I'm still building a loadout). Once I have ~800 rounds worth of magazines and a molle vest I'll get a pistol. I don't even have a holster right now.
*I could get a cheapo clone AEG for that price
EDIT: Are CO2 GBB's better or more economical than green gas/duster gas pistols?

I don't have a lot of experience with Co2, but my Co2 mag for my WE is terrible.
Just a quick run-through on pistols (via redwolf) shows me a bunch of KWC pistols at like 50 bucks or so.... Wouldn't that work? Someone with experience want to tell me that they're junk?

KWC makes/made a line of "liteblowback" models that were indeed junk. They only cycled half way, had closed breaches, and shot at a very wimpy FPS even by CQB standards. You don't want those. That said, KWC's M9 was the industry standard M9 before the KSC and TM came along to displace it. And their Desert Eagle was by far the best Desert Eagle on the market until TM's most recent offering. What I'm getting at is, some models are quite nice, some fall into that realm of springers and old EBB pistols.

Short answer: No. HFC makes a pretty mediocre gun. The cheapest brand that'll actually last you a bit is KJW. Look into them.

I agree with Knief, Back in the day KWC had the best DE on the market, I have personal experience with those as a friend bought one, they weigh a lot and are surprisingly efficient on gas and shoot great. Now that TM and KSC expanded their lines a TON the last decade or so, I would try n go with something from them. Look into KWA as well, they are manufactured by KSC. (as far as I know) they are the same gun without trades essentially. At least that was my understanding before. We actually had identical KWA/KSC guns (kwa g19 and ksc g17) both with full metal kits and they were literally identical except for trades. Both performed great for a very long time. You can get into a a KWA for under $100 depending on what gun you're looking at and it is going to perform really well and last a long time.
Stay away from HFC/UHC if you can, as Knief said very mediocre to poor quality guns. We also had these when we first started out and they were not worth the money. But I have had good luck with KJW. I had a full metal M9 from them and it shot really great, very efficient and easily picked up moving people at 100-130'. The trigger spring broke on it though, but it is a $4.00 replacement part. Wasn't as reliable as the KSC/KWA's were but I think their QC has come up the last 10 years or so. I would recommend KWA, KJW, KSC. For the budget conscious player these would be the best choices from my experience with them.

KWA and KSC aren't manufactured together. They were very similar because the two companies shared designs. The only difference before was that KWA built their replicas for the American market (around 350 fps) and KSC built theirs for the Asian market (under 1J, or 300- fps). Also, KWA's new NS2 series is no longer compatible with the KSC replicas. Both are great GBB's, though.
