Had an account here a few years ago while first getting into airsoft and then eventually just faded away from playing due to lack of money and interest, and never actually got to attend an event. Couple buddies and I picked up some new gear and are getting back into things after seeing some new places open up and the scene seeming really promising for this year.
I do have an entry level CYMA 028 AK and plan on upgrading and picking up a sidearm after I start my job this week, but I'm currently in the works of building a load out and was wondering what your guys thoughts are on camo? I was aiming for just an all black load out (swat/merc) saying as I just purchased and received my OE-TECH black crossdraw vest and saveface mask, but I don't see too many events that seem to be friendly/less strict towards that kind of loadout, with just the TAN versus GREEN. Maybe I just didn't look close enough at the details.
Planning on actually starting a team with my 5-6 friends so we're going to have similar loadouts, so just kind of wanted to verify if that's not something that's frowned upon at most events, because we plan on attending many this spring and summer, millsim and rec if possible.

I'd stay away from all black. It doesn't blend in with anything, especially in the woods. Woodland is probably the best "starter" camo, if you even want to call it that. It's cheap, effective, and you can find it at pretty much any army surplus store. Heck, my local Dunhams even sells woodland BDUs, albeit they're not standard issue BDUs. Another thing that most people on these boards will say is to steer clear from crossdraw vests. This thread will give you most of the details you'll need to know why. miairsoft.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gallery&action=display&thread=42526Gearing up and matching with your teammates/friends isn't frowned upon at all. If you attend a real game, you'll quickly realize that the majority of the big airsoft teams here in MI (Hellfish, ODA 561, Suicide Kings, etc.) are almost always matching.

Unless your at a Milsim, You can wear any loadout that you want to. But let me tell you, Airsoft is a fashion show.
Welcome back to the great sport of Airsoft, and maybe I'll have a chance to sling some plastic with you in the future!

Welcome broseph
All black looks badass, but don't get a crossdraw. MOLLE looks better, performs better, and is almost cheaper in some cases.

Regardless whether or not all black looks "badass", it's hardly, if at all effective. You'd be surprised how much an all black shadowy looking figure sticks out in the woods. Maybe for a CQB game, but definitely not in the woods. Then again this is coming from someone who uses gear/guns/camo effectively instead of just trying to look like a "badass." If your all into airsoft just for the looks, then I say go for it, give the less stupid people an easy target!

Yeah I realized right off the bat that my vest fits my AK mags very tightly, almost unwilling. I thought I had did enough research but I guess you live and you learn right? Up until recently I basically based my knowledge off of the amount off the amount of product reviews, oh well. I have no complaints for now though, I'm most likely switching to an m4/m16 variant which will for sure support and fit those clips much better. Definitely wasn't the best investment and will most likely switch whenever I can sell it off. Only reason I dig black is because we're most likely gearing up for more CQB/indoor typed stuff since a lot more opportunities for that kind of stuff here seems to be opening up, but will for sure have the green/woodland camo for the more outdoor/millsim type events.

I hear you there in the crossdraw mate, I bought one as my first vest back in the day thinking it was coolest thing in the world. After a while I realized why other options are better. I mean I guess it worked just fine, but there was just too much wasted space on it, and mine wasn't MOLLE so I couldn't even replace the pouches that I had no use for. 3 mags just isn't enough for a normal game. Good to hear that you'll be getting black and woodland BDUs. Black definitely works in CQB. The only downside is you'll need two rigs unless you don't mind mismatching. Black rig with woodland/MARPAT/any other "green" camouflage is just down right ugly in my opinion. And vise-versa is even worse. *EDIT* Oh and one last thing regarding the AK mags not fitting in your pouches. I had a similar problem with a rig I had not fitting M14 pouches properly. If you have some spare time and are good enough at sewing/stitching (or your mom, girlfriend, or wife is ) You can try un-sewing the pouches and re-sew them a little closer to the edge to give it more space. I did this to my rig and it works perfectly now, although I no longer use an M14 so it doesn't really matter anymore. ;D

Yeah I also have to invest in midcaps with the new gun because I just have two high-caps which I already know is sort of frowned upon/not allowed at times. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get two m4 clips to fit per pouch, I just know the AK clips have an odd fit. It'll be a good CQB vest because it supports 4 pistol clips plus the one already in the gun.

The AK magazines are a weird fit because the pouches on the crossdraw are designed for M4 mags. Edit: Basic, you stole my sig .
