If you see someone that says "NO CLONES" on their sales thread, just ask them to be more specific and name the brands they want or don't want because each person will have their own ideas.

Just like Zorak said, it`s really all personal opinion and maybe even personal experiences, like I will never buy a A&K again after my bad experience with that company, but I have seen many reviews and comments saying the gun was great. So I cant really rule out they are all crap, but cause I got burned once, I wont be buying an A&K brand gun again. Only way you will separate the good and bad brands is testing them yourself, cause some people love a certain brand cause they have had good experiences with that brand, and others, like me, cause of one bad experience, considers the brand bad. All you will pull from a thread like this is opinions and I suggest go with one that appeals to you the most and just go from there.

I was hoping that wasn't the case. The last thing I wanted was to have to decipher everyone's different meaning of clone.

Then just go by reviews and go off that, or just get the gun you like and think is the best and see. Really the things to look for are quality, metal gearbox, and the over all gun.

No I mean it in more of a commerce sales thread way, I buy the guns I want but if I want to trade a dude and his thread says "NO CLONES" then I have no clue if my gun qualifies as a clone in his mind.

BM_5 I completely agree with most here. In the end its a personal thing. Unfortunately you will never know exactly what people are referring to. However I do think that Gimpalong put a nice guide. It's a well thought out answer and something you could follow. In the end all companies are clones of real steel anyway. The fact that one did it first doesn't make them the best at it. Evey company keeps trying to re-invent the same items. If there are guns out there that are exact replicas and they just changed the name on them, that would be a true clone and even then they might have had better materials or care with making them. So they could still be better.

This really shouldn't be hard.
When people say "no clones," they are talking about guns that are made by Cyma, Dboys, JLS, KART, JG, S&T (?) and other manufacturers based out of China. These manufacturers are said to produce "All China Made" (ACM) guns. ACM and "clone" are (usually) synonymous.
"Mainstream" manufacturers such as:
TM CA G&P ICS KA G&G KWA VFC Ares/Star Systema
are NOT (in common airsoft parlance) referred to as "clone" or ACM companies. First off, these "mainstream" manufacturers produce (generally) reliable products that should work fine out of the box. Second, these companies are headquartered in countries throughout Asia, but not in China (Hong Kong is an exception).
If it's not made by one of the companies in the list of "mainstream" manufacturers*, it is probably a "clone" or ACM rifle.
If a gun comes in a box that is labeled UTG, Echo 1 or Cybergun, it is likely that that gun is a "clone" made by an ACM company.
*Not an exhaustive list, I may have missed a few of the "mainstream" manufacturers.
