Storyline
November 27th, 2011
Officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are expected to make a visit to the breakaway region of North Kosovo in January amid the discovery of Nuclear Warheads leftover from the dissolution of the former Soviet Union.
The Nuclear Warheads were found in a previously undocumented underground bunker in the disputed border region of North Kosovo last Friday. The storage facility containing the warheads was unearthed when groundbreaking began for a new series of apartment flats near the city of Leposavic.
Cross border tensions and small skirmishes have plagued the breakaway territory since its provisional government declared independence in 2008. The ethnic Serb majority of North Kosovo supports independence from the Republic of Kosovo, which has an ethnic Albanian majority.
An official statement from the Kosovan capital Pristina is quoted in saying that “Kosovo has no desire to become a Nuclear Weapon state and in the current climate of Nuclear Proliferation this matter should be handled with the transparency and involvement of the IAEA.”
