If CA is calling their replica an XM117, they're doing so to avoid trade mark infringement. Their XM117 is a replica of the XM177. Like I said, as far as I can find, Colt never made any XM117.

Sorry if this thread is too old, but I feel that as a "'Nam Nut,"I could contribute to this topic. First off, you need to decide if you will be packing light or heavy. If you prefer to pack light, as if on patrol, you will not need to purchase a flak jacket. However, for the purposes of this thread, I'm going to assume you'll be packing heavy, as if defending a prepared position, a situation in which you would be wearing one. An important point is that the flak jackets used in the film are M69's, and are anachronistic for the film's time frame, late '67 to early '68. For that, you'll want an M55 ( www.cranetechnologiesinc.com/Body%20Armor/USMarineM55FlackVest1.jpg ), famed for its use by the Marine Corps in the recapture of Hue City. As Gunny said earlier, you'll want M56 web gear, which you can buy in a complete set here: www.mooremilitaria.com/packages.htm You could also do what I did and build a set of less-known M67 web gear ( www.usmilitariaforum.com/uploads//monthly_09_2010/post-3273-1285385178.jpg ), which was the precursor to ALICE. The difference is that the M67 suspenders are H-type( www.usmilitariaforum.com/uploads//monthly_09_2007/post-5-1188923460.jpg ), while ALICE suspenders are Y-type( gallery.kitmaker.net/data/25910/ALICE_suspenders.jpg ). You will also want to note that Vietnam-era jungle fatigues are different than modern OD BDUs. While modern BDUs have straight chest pockets, jungle fatigues have slanted pockets. They are also a darker shade, and modern BDUs will look funky with Vietnam-era gear as a result. Here are some Vietnam-era jungle fatigues, starting with the shirt: www.nexternal.com/armynavy/images/vietnam-fatigue-shirt--od1.gif And now the pants: fullmetaljacket.com/catalog/images/renampnt.bmp After your fatigues are in order, you'll need some jungle boots. Be sure to remember which era you are looking to imitate. For '61 through '66, you'll want black boots such as these: www.nexternal.com/armynavy/images/Black_Ripple_Jungle_Boots1.gif If you still plan on the era shown in "Platoon," you'll want the kind that were first issued in '67, with OD trim: qmfashion.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/p_196393_1297658.jpg For the problem with wearing a red bandana, this will be perfect for you impression: www.armynavydeals.com/asp/products_details.asp?SKU=BundScarf&ST=2 Last, but certainly not least, you'll need to dirty up your uniform by rolling around in the dirt, getting into the mud, etc. Growing a few days' worth of whiskers doesn't hurt, either. Make sure you look like a grizzled veteran, not a cherry! Enjoy, and I hope this information comes in handy!

There's a two-day 'Nam game in Bangor next weekend, you'll find it in th event section. I won't be there, because I'll be at the other two-day event in LaPorte. My Vietnam kit (I'm doing LRRPs) is actually not quite finished yet, although I use it in its current state sometimes. I primarily run with a WWII 34th ID impression, so the Vietnam stuff kind of comes as a second project. I'm just a military history buff, and have a keen interest in Vietnam, and took a class on it. The gear was one of the things talked about, and I've gotten to a point where I've learned a lot about it and can identify all of it with one glance. I'm just glad to help when I can, and hope everyone can appreciate it.
