OP: NINE HAMMERS: A WARLORD EVENT
In late 2008, a regrettable military incident occurred in Afghanistan. An elite Marine force recon team was involved in an unsanctioned raid against insurgent forces, compromising the combat posture of the US military forces in the theater of operations.
A handpicked US Army unit was sent in to retrieve them, and return their members for justice in a military court. However, for the members of the Marine Force Recon unit, designated the Nine Hammers, the mission had become a personal one.
This incident has become classified at the highest levels of military authority.
Now, the story will be told. One of the most explosive military incidents of our time will be revealed.
On the field of battle, truth, honor, valor and ideals will collide. Alliances will be made and broken. Bonds will be tested, lives will be lost, and American troops in the most dangerous corner of the world will find out that the only difference between a friendly and an enemy is the direction of their fire.
Welcome to total war.
WELCOME TO OP: NINE HAMMERS
The Nine Hammers (9H) have operated in and around the Bouttry Housseyn District for the past two years, hand have come to have an intimate understanding of their surroundings and the forces and indig populace of the region.
They were thus well poised to make a snatch and grab of a HVT in late 2008.
During the mission to secure one of the top insurgent leaders in the area, a Fayd Al-Mussawi, three members of the 9H unit were killed in action, including founding member, Ssgt. Gary Bliss. Two other unit members, Lcpl. Mike Hutchins, and Sgt. Martin von Gries, died of their wounds in the Marine infirmary within days of the mission.
While hailed as a success, the mission put a sour taste in the mouth of the 9H, most notably the unit's commander, Cpt. Aidan Spears.
Spears was reluctant to hand Mussawi over to Marine brass, and was publicly overheard stating "I'm going to beat (Mussawi) until he gives me a name. Any name. And then we're going there, and killing whatever we find." His men were noted as abing in total agreement with their CO.
Due to Spears' close connection with his troops, and the losses they suffered, it was decided that Mussawi would be turned over to an Army special interrogation unit, and that Spears and the rest of the 9H put on temporary leave, until they could regain their composure.
Officially, this time period was to allow replacements to move up from the rear and integrate into the 9H's unit structure.
These decisions were to prove disastrous.
At an unknown time and date, Spears and his men began to conspire to break Mussawi out of lock-up for what Spears termed "personal interrogation."
On the morning of Oct. 22, 2008, Cpt. Spears and a handpicked squad of longtime 9H members attacked the barracks of the US Army headquarters in the Bouttry Housseyn district. During the attack, four Army servicemen were wounded, and one 9H member was killed by rifle fire.
Spears and his remaining men forcibly extracted Mussawi, and together with the remaining men of the 9H, they withdrew to an unknown area of the AO, where the presumably interrogated Mussawi.
On the morning of October 25th, 2008, Spears and his men headed for a wilderness location that had been rumored to house a large concentration of insurgent personnel.
This area had previously been off-limits to offensive operations due to undercover intelligence operators working in the area.
The inability of the 9H to conduct offensive operations in this area was a major irritant to Spears, and whatever intelligence he had obtained from Mussawi had led him to turn his men loose in this area.
General Morgan Painter, overall commander of the US forces in this region, immediately sent US Army Rangers to track down and detain the rogue Marine unit.
Unbeknownst to the marines, Painter was working on an intelligence project with several small undercover SF units, operating in the AO under deep cover.
If Painter's plan worked, the Army would bag up about 4/ths of the High value Targets in the area, including Ibn al Nassiri, who is rumored to be one of the top al Quaeda leaders in Afghanistan.
Painter briefly debated holding off and allowing the Marines to carry our their plans. However, an intelligence source within al Queda sent word that the meeting of the HVTs might be canceled due to reports of Marines "wrecking everything the could get their hands on," General Painter ordered his Rangers into the biggest blue-on-blue firefight in American military history.
