I was planning on getting the new S3 IS around christmas time for recreational phtography. I was gonna get the panasonic FZ30 which is a lot better, but the website just raised the price from 379 to 600 (MSRP). It was a sale or something, should have cashed in.
damn nice shots, and a nice gun too

The gun is nice, but I am much more impressed with the camera. The red dot reflex sight is dang sexy. Still, nice camera.

I really like the pictures, very mint. I just said mint.. what the fuck. I still want a gander at that camera.

Typically I'm not a fan of the M4/M16 style weaponry, but this one... something different about it.
Perhaps it's the background, perhaps it's the amazing camera quality, or perhaps it's just a seemingly short-length about it... but I'm impressed.
Excellent pictures.

It's not the camera, it's the photographer! Good stuff, Knief. As always, I'm a fan of the short 20-rounders for AR variants.

The main thing turning me off of the S*-IS line is the need for AA batteries. That and the camera doesnt feel like it wants to be in my hand... the shape just doesn't do it for me.
The FZ 5 and 7 are little tiny cameras (too small for my hands), not too many bells and whatnot. The 30 has a big swivel LCD like the Canons, 8mp, 12x optical with 4x digital zoom, an image stabilizer that is second only to cameras made for their stabilization (like the new sony one). The BIG thing I wanted on the FZ30 is the manual zoom and focus rings on the lens, plus the lens movement is completely internal so shock protection is quite good in not allowing an impact to the lens and make it to pop off the track or something. It also has a few deeper features and all the auto modes for sport, outdoor, lowlight, etc. and can take a larger array of semi-professional lens attachments since it uses an SLR sized ring attachment for filters and adaptors (for tele, wide, panarama, etc).
Photography is quickly becoming one of my main hobbies. Cameras like the S2/S3 IS and the FZ30 are a step below SLR and have the good quality coupled with modes for people who aren't willing to master aperture and shutter settings but still want something more than a pocket camera for high-quality shooting.
