You have to have an orange tip on a gun that's being sold, but there isn't anything to stop you from taking it off after

That is correct. As of right now the orange tips are ONLY needed for importing and sales.
Once you own it, you can do whatever. However that doesn't mean some uninformed police officer wont take it away then you are stuck fighting to get it back.
Here is what I do to avoid such issues. I keep a plastic orange tip on the gun for transporting and when I get there, I unscrew that and screw on my metal one.

You can't take it anywhere either, to be honest. That's also part of federal law, even if you're taking it to a game.

No...... You only need it for shipping it.......nothing else. It's a good idea to have one on, but you DON'T need it.

Again, once the END user owns it, he can remove the orange, paint it black, paint it pink, whatever

TITLE 15--COMMERCE AND TRADE CHAPTER 76--IMITATION FIREARMS Sec. 5001. Penalties for entering into commerce of imitation firearms
(a) Acts prohibited
It shall be unlawful for any person to manufacture, enter into commerce, ship, transport, or receive any toy, look-alike, or imitation firearm unless such firearm contains, or has affixed to it, a marking approved by the Secretary of Commerce, as provided in subsection (b) of this section.
(b) Distinctive marking or device; exception; waiver; adjustments and changes
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2) or (3), each toy, look- alike, or imitation firearm shall have as an integral part, permanently affixed, a blaze orange plug inserted in the barrel of such toy, look- alike, or imitation firearm. Such plug shall be recessed no more than 6 millimeters from the muzzle end of the barrel of such firearm. (2) The Secretary of Commerce may provide for an alternate marking or device for any toy, look-alike, or imitation firearm not capable of being marked as provided in paragraph (1) and may waive the requirement of any such marking or device for any toy, look-alike, or imitation firearm that will only be used in the theatrical, movie or television industry. (3) The Secretary is authorized to make adjustments and changes in the marking system provided for by this section, after consulting with interested persons.
(c) ``Look-alike firearm'' defined
For purposes of this section, the term ``look-alike firearm'' means any imitation of any original firearm which was manufactured, designed, and produced since 1898, including and limited to toy guns, water guns, replica nonguns, and air-soft guns firing nonmetallic projectiles. Such term does not include any look-alike, nonfiring, collector replica of an antique firearm developed prior to 1898, or traditional B-B, paint-ball, or pellet-firing air guns that expel a projectile through the force of air pressure.

Please note:
TITLE 15--COMMERCE AND TRADE
Not
TITLE 15--PRIVATE OWNERSHIP
Also:
Sec. 5001. Penalties for entering into commerce of imitation firearms
Commerce being the key word here. Again, the end user can remove them as of right now. So far I don't know of any laws on the books againest it but I see Texas is working on getting some hard laws on the books about the subject.

"Nothing special" he says.. Hahah I like it. A lot. Only I'd put rear flip ups and take the carry handle off, move the Eotech back. What a nice piece..

Actually, about a week before that picture was taken thats how it was setup. The EOTech was on the upper with no carry handle and right behind that was an ARMS style flip up sight like you see with say the S-System from Marui. Was a nice setup but the sight belonged to TACK's Marui M4 S-System and I have to return it I didn't want to be without an iron site so I bumped the EOTech up to the Surefire hand guard until I can get another rear flip sight although I'm sure I'll dump the carry handle for Op Northern Wind 3 this weekend and just make sure I put some "new" batteries in the EOTech before we play.

It would look better with EOTech where the carry handle is. I like systemas though, very nice.
