You have the set screw off and you're turning it lefty-tighty, righty-loosey?

you've gotta find yourself a tiny hex screw...in metric size. i think it's .050, or something like that. About 3 weeks before i had to remove that screw on my G36 (same size screw, i believe) i bought this tiny tool kit on an impulse at a dollar store (along with like, 4 big rolls of electrical tape for 50 cents a roll, what a great deal). I tried all of the hex wrenches in my normal set, and finally remembered that i had this tool kit, and that it had little hex wrenches in it. This tiny one fit. I was so amazed that i had the luck to buy that without even knowing. And now my plastic orange flash hider is collecting dust while my nice black one is getting scratched up on the field. Oh yeah

I would use the set screw, just in case. You don't want to lose your flash hider as it protects your inner barrel more than anything else.
