Ok, I was looking at www.nightvisionstore.com for some nightvision. My current price range is about 300$ MAX. I've never used nightvision for more than a minute, and it was like a 6k$ set, so I know the cheap monoculars wont compare to that, But My team and I are going to Codename: Thunder II, and being 24 hours, we want to be ready for at night castle attacks on those columbians ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Does anyone have any experience with nightvision, that can help me find a decent monocular for around 300$!!?? Serious replies only please.

Yea my friend has NVGs that hes borrowing from a friend that is in basic training. I don't know the type of it but I do know that it is effing sweet.
I found when I switched to thermal it would be a whole lot easier to see your enemy (duh). I guess when its regular night vision its pretty awesome too, its definitely not hard to see in them.
I will say though you need some sort of protective cover over it to protect your 300 dollar NVGs. because I know I would be pretty pissed if someone shot them and broke 'em.
I would check good old ebay, they have pretty good prices for them.

Don't bother with GEN I NVGs, or even cheap GEN IIs. In heavy woods, they are useless. Also, make sure you have an IR flood, unless the enemy has NVGs too. (The IR flood acts as a flashlight for NVGs). For 300 bucks, I'd probably just save for a better set. But then again, it is airsoft.

The monocle's we use in Iraq run for around 5k plus if I remember correctly. They mount directly to our helmets and are heavy as F*CK!!! ( Just did a 5 hour shift in a tower wearing them). However, they have great definition and an IR flood, which works great for helping you see going through brush. When I look at my buddy with his IR flood on, it is like a beacon singling him out. So it wouldn't do you too much good in a night op where other peeps probably have night vision, it's like someone wearing a head mounted flash light. Don't expect to find them on ebay though, pretty sure they are restricted. Also for a fairly compact unit, it was, again, rather heavy with prolonged use.

They're restricted for export, but still available for sale to citizens. Doing a search on eBay for 'pvs' brought up 88 matches. If you're looking for Gen3 stuff though, other websites are definitely your best bet, like the one you mentioned, www.nightvisionweb.com (Whom I've ordered from before, good people) or even LightFighter.

Gen 2 and 3s are all over $1,000. Only thing I can find for really below $700 are Gen 1s. What is the difference really? I know that the more you pay, the better quality you will get of course, but for Airsoft I don't want to spend $3k - $5k and have it possibly shot out by a BB.
That brings up another question. For scopes, I know you can buy KillFlashes. So that a BB won't break the lense and you can keep your scope from a BB breaking through it. Is there anything like this available for Night Vision?

I know the PVS goggles have hard plastic filters available to them.
The difference is how well you can see. Watch Platoon and check out the starlight scope that Charlie Sheen looks through during the first ambush scene. You want to run around the woods being able to see, generally, nothing except neon green blobs of various shapes? That's what you're gonna get with Gen 1.

Well see: I want these of course: AN/PVS-7B Night Vision Goggles : $3542.63![](http://www.lightfighter.com/istarimages/p/p-NVG-002!023.jpg) But will only be able to maybe afford these: Deluxe Night Vision Goggles ANVS-3107 : $619![](http://www.nightvisionweb.com/images/anvs_3107.jpg) I don't have $2,000 - $12,000+ sitting around, but I could manage $600 possibly. Do you know of any cheaper solutions that may be a little lower then $2,000 that would allow me to see alright, and not green blobs? Possibly a Gen 2 under $1,000 that has an IR filter and wouldn't get me the GREATEST sight, but enough so I could navigate well?

i bought a pair of the russian gen 1 goggles back a few years ago and they work pretty good under "ideal" conditions but the tube quality is not so hot. they are a hastle to keep in focus and the IR has already ceased to function. i brought them to a night op two years ago in muskegon that WTS (mike and clayton) put on and i was immediatly put on point to scout ahead. i found them better to use as a "viewer" instead of strapping them on my head but after using them, it took a while for my eyes to re-adjust so i could move again. i got to try on a pair of the gen 3's once and they are a huge improvement but like you are finding out, they cost between $3000-5000 bucks where i think i got the russian stuff for about $400. gen 4 is about to be made available so maybe the gen 3's will come down in price someday but i won't recommend the gen 1's. if we do a night op in the future, i'll bring them along so anyone that wants to see for themselves can check it out.

You were the guy that made us sit in a swamp for 1.5 hours before finally calling it quits? Aw, Rogue.

Thanks for the advice Jacko, I am watching them on Ebay. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) , there are a couple of those for sale on there, and all in my price range, but I guess since I won't be using them to much as it is anyhow, with the limited night operations I play in as it is, I guess I wouldn't want to drop almost $1,000 into it anyways. *And sorry Rogue, for making your bring that up and revealing to Jacko you had to make him wait in a swamp for 1 1/2 hours ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) *

The main reason I suggested that particular model is because it's Gen1+, it's cheap, and a monocular. Usually, cheapo NVG's don't have any kind of 'flash kill' capabilities, which is when they'll adjust when a bright light is encountered so you don't get your retinas burned out. With a monocular, if someone shines a Surefire your way you'll have one good eye left afterwards. For protection, I'd probably cut a circle out of 1/4" plexi and place it in front of the optical lens.

well, that was the plan , to make ya wait and get too tired to loot and shoot! brilliant strategy!! actually , that whole part of the op was a giant cluster , i started out in front and wound up in the back of the group and was getting more shooting in back there ,ambushing the ambushers!! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Has anyone mentioned that prolong use cause tunnel vision.Be careful it tends to set off your depth perception.Other than that ,its a great scouting tool.
Imagin driving a abrahms or hummer, while wearing NVG's...Yikes.Been there, done that.....I wont argue about thermal optics, that was mentioned .But they are usually not in scope ,per say but rather a night sight for tracks.Tv glamorizes them for God guns(50cal sniper rifle)Im sure the price is way to high for that.
