I too had a great time at Blind Fury III. There were some truly excellent setpiece battles that developed quite organically at the field, including the retaking of the Kreiger base and an uphill assault of one of the artillery pieces late in the game. I espeically liked the objectives with electronic scoring (despite not knowing what to do with them at points). It was a hot day, but manageable with ample hydration. Please enjoy a few pics from the event.
Early on in the game, a Krieger squad scales the ravine. Later on, this squad took the following objective:
...the Strikers' "artillery cannon" with hardened electronic scoring. Someone had recently popped a huge orange smoke, making for a neat picture.
Another view. The controls are the black box with three switches. The team who depressed the proper switch and had it light up (green in our case) got 100 objective points every 15 minutes. The Kreigers had control of this piece for most of the game, but it was hard won at various times during the day.
A close-up of the scoring computer. I imagine the telemetry is downloaded to a computer through the DB9 serial port on the bottom.
Another view of the cannon and the field. The perspective is a bit squashed here, but the background is a tall, steep ravine perhaps 75 feet high. The cannon sits on a small ridge 3/4ths the way up the opposite side of the ravine of roughly the same grade and height. Assaulting the objective was an exercise in aggressiveness and fire superiority.
Along one of the trails, the Russian team attacks some Tropico dogs. The Striker on the far right has just been hit with four BBs. You can see them, blurred somewhat, in this pic. One of 'em hit his armpit!
After the Kriegers retook their base (a furious melee that put our CQB skills to the test, Hail Krieger!), I headed out alone to secure the cannon, abandoned in order that replacements could assist in the recapture.
I took the position unopposed, and took up the defensive position shown here to await my comrades. Soon I heard a patrol approach, a Tropico patrol! Alone, I knew my best chance stood in delaying the enemy forces long enough for the reinforcements to arrive. Perhaps wise to my intentions, the Tropico patrol quickly encircled and eliminated me, but not without casualties...
From my (dead) vantage point near the cannon, I was witness to the excellent assault to retake it. Arriving Kreiger forces poured fire on the Tropicos from across the ravine, and they pulled back. The tan-dressed enemy forces headed away from the cannon up the hill to take up defensive positions. With plenty of covering fire from well-hidden troops on the ravine opposite the cannon, the intrepid Kreiger pictured here scaled the hill and secured the objective. It made the strategist inside me weep with joy.
The Tropicos, perhaps sensing an immenent takeover of the cannon, began advancing to positions able to overlook it from above. A Krieger assaulter switches to his pistol, valiantly defending the objective and repelling the invader while simultaneously observing engagement distance rules.
Eventually, other Kreigers streamed up the hill, flanking and bounding like mad. I could not have been happier unless I were able to participate. Which I was, eventually, as the assault team contained
three medics.
My favorite pic of the day:
Near the bottom of the ravine, a corpsman is pulling wounded to safety for healing.
Your intrepid photographer, while on defense detail at the cannon.
Those of you not there missed out on the ice cream truck sitting out in the parking lot after the game. It was a great day for tasty frozen treats, lemme tell you.
The dudes in 6MM Militia know how to prep for a big event like BF3.
