okay, i got to ask the uber noob question. If i buy a radio with both GMRS and FRS, as long as i don't use the GMRS then there would be no need for a licence, correct? Basically i'm asking, are they assuming you'll just be a good person and only use the FRS unless you've paid they cash to use GMRS.

To be succinct, yes.
If you purchase a radio with both frequency bands programmed into it, you can just use it for FRS. You certainly can use GMRS as well, it's just the fact if somebody happens to be monitoring or the FCC doing an audit on those frequencies and turns you in whilst operating on them without a license, you'd probably be fined by the FCC.

Its only what $75 I think, and it covers everyone in your home once you get the license.

It only covers those in your home whom are immediate family.
Though, as I stated earlier, the performance gains you would receive with handheld GMRS are negligible when compared to a handheld FRS radio. If you are looking to boost your transmitting range, either invest in a good FRS radio and replace it's antenna with a longer one, or if so inclined, set up a repeater.

Using cell-phones capable of two-way traffic isn't really a viable solution for use in two-way traffic in airsoft.
Cell Phones are obviously more expensive than their FRS radio counterparts, certainly more expensive to replace, and infinitely more complicated, as well as the fact when using cell phones you're relegated to one channel with no interoperability with FRS frequencies. One also has to take into account the ease of cell-phone transmissions to be picked up by other people (with obvious ramifications).
If you can afford a nextel cell phone, just get a 10-30 dollar FRS radio fer cryin' out loud.

Radios are a great investment, if everyone or near everyone on a team has them. When i first started getting into airsoft around a 1 yr ago, i saw those radios as uselless. Now i can honestly say they are one of the best things to have. However, invest in a throat mic system to. The throat mic makes things a lot easier
This is the system i'm runing: - cobra pr 3100 dx 2-way radios - iasus sniper nt throat microphone
Well i will be runing soon. As i just ordered the throat mic saturday.

That what i would like to order at some point, those NT Sniper throat mics. Airsoft retreat has a nice review on them. They also have examples.
