New to the sport -My first gun - TM MP5 A4. The first shot after inserting a reloaded mag is always a mis-fire and then 100% reliability after that. Does the gun need to be fired once ( after mag insertion) as part of the normal reloading cycle?

I would say that is quite normal,
Most AEG's tend to have the first shot blank, as it uses the last round from the previous clip and has no mechanism to put the 1st round into the chamber... but, there are guns, such as the KWC M16 rife that keep the last round from each clip, ensuring your first shot is not a blank. But all in all, I would say it is quite normal, and nothing to be worried about. We do have quite a few experts on the board here who can give some more input... and possibly tell you how to make the first BB feed before firing, but I'm no expert heh. ;D
Hope that helps a bit!

Perhaps Biggie is right,
but from the 5-6 AEG's I've fired, the first round on a new mag is always blank, my guessing is because the round has no way to load into the barrel for firing before being shot once.

not on my G3. or my AK-47. of course...it does depend on where the nozzle stops. if it stops full forward, it could block the BB from entering the chamber on the next shot. try shooting a magazine through it on semi only....then load a second mag into it. does the first shot feed fine?

Thanks for the information! Lets assume that it is "normal" (I have no authority to argue on way or the other) could this be detrimental to the mechanism? I am not always certain of how many shots I have fired at times and have run out the mag in semi and full auto which resulted in some "blank" shots being fired ( I do try to stop as soon as possible) Is that detrimental? To answer the Bigmack's question. After a full mag of semi auto two BBs always fall out of the nozzle after pulling the mag. Then being empty, it takes one shot to start the cylce over again.

from inside the magazine well? that's normal.
reload the gun upside down. happens on every AEG.
so far as damaging the mechanism... the BB offers resistance to the piston in the gearbox (via the compressed air) the piston wasn't designed to impact the front of the gearbox with full force (there have been plenty of stories i've heard about shattered stock pistons) so it CAN destroy the piston. on the bright side, one hit every so often shouldn't do much to the piston.
think of it as playing bloody knuckles. one hit and you're sore...but no biggie.
now play it for 4 hours. ;D (i did that once. my hands were swollen for 2 days and it looked like i was wearing gloves.)

thats simple. if u have an m16 or ak or something like it you should be able to pull the cocking handle like the real gun to make the first shot acually shoot a bb

AK47, doesn't work that way on airsoft guns. if a cocking lever was linked to the piston, pulling it back would strip teeth off the piston or gears...if you could even pull it back at all.
however, if it could somehow be used to push the nozzle back, it could handle that strain...and it would work.
other than Gas blowbacks, this is fiction at this point.
