Two short stories...one, a classic tale of ambush...and the second...an amusing case of poor judgement.
Our force strolled deep into the pine forest, attempting to divine where the attack would most likely come from. We wandered towards the rear of the engagement area, and hastily laid battle plans. The team would seperate into three small squads. The first would be our sniper team, set up in a very advantageous position overlooking a large clearing and pond. The other two would simply stalk the pine forest in search of our foes. My patrol decided it would be wise to lay in ambush...we picked a spot near an intersection in the paths running between the thick pines, and set up on either side of one end of the intersection, hiding within the trees, virtually uninvisible.
After what seemed like an interminable wait (y'know, like 5 minutes), the enemy finally showed themselves. Hastily whispering into my radio, I alerted my teammates to the tangos' presence. I could only see one member of the enemy team, but knew there would be more close...so I held my fire as long as I could. Soon, their movements threatened to take them out of my line of sight, and I was forced to fire. My (borrowed) AK-47 spat a long burst of plastic death, and I was treated to the sight of my target falling over, mortally wounded. Another member of the enemy squad revealed himself as he moved for cover and attempted to return fire, but it was in vain. I was simply too deep in cover to hit. I fired some more, the sound of my rifle mingling with that of the rest of my patrol, but the range was long, and he'd found cover...but I was again able to see my enemy fall, as our second squad opened up on him. We quickly regrouped, and moved off for some more killing.
Later on, the enemy had gained the advantage of cover, and had several of our team pinned down, with others slain. Talisman, Myself, and another (Savage?) had moved up slightly, leapfrogging from tree to tree. We knew the general direction the enemy was in...but their location was a mystery. The tables had been turned; what once provided us with the perfect cover to lie in and prepare an ambush was now doing the same for the enemy. We knew we had to move...to get out of the spot we were, lest the enemy manage to flank us and catch us in crossfire. Savage pondered aloud "well, are one of you guys gonna move, or do I have to?". I took the hint, quickly checked to be sure that the path I had to cross was clear, and picked a tree to take cover in on the other side. Quickly, I sprinted across the path in a half-crouch, towards my target tree, confident that I had made a good choice.
My confidence quickly faded as I neared the tree...and saw the distinctive outline of goggles and a boonie hat behind the thick branches. My mind screamed "OH SHIT!!!"...just as several of the enemy opened up on me with full-auto bursts. I fell dead...but this was not the end...as my own teammates lit me up further while trying to eliminate the enemy. One of the enemy was hit, and lay dead not 5 feet from me. Another was laying right next to me, the barrel of his rifle seemingly right next to my head as he fired bursts at my faithful comrades. Eventually he was forced to retreat, as some of our dead respawned and he became grossly outnumbered. I was left wishing my teammates were a little less enthusiastic in taking vengeance for me...probably because in doing so, they shot me more than they shot the enemy!
