Get yourself a Baofeng UV-5R. It's cheap, it's programmable. It works. www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-UV-5R-Dual-Band-136-174-400-480/dp/B0097252UKI've always had issues with my old setups, and i am in the market for a new one. I went through at least 2, maybe three of the Chinese PTTs over the years and went through at least one or two Bowman style headsets and finally had enough.

Hey Reaper,
A bunch of us have had those bowman style headsets in the past. My recommendation is to skip it and buy a hand mic. The hand mic functions as its own PTT, it isn't jammed right up against your ear (super loud) and they're not uncomfortable to wear. Those bowman clones are also fairly expensive in comparison to a hand mic ($40+ versus $15ish).
You may also want to consider simply upgrading to Baofeng. A lot of us have made the switch in the last couple of years. The advantages that the Baofeng have over bubblepack Motorola type radios is really too long to get into here and there are better sources of information on this, but they are very inexpensive and perform significantly better than the Motorola offerings. The accessories (batteries, antennas, etc) are also very, very cheap.
I think I paid $80 for my Motorola and then split the two radio bubblepack with my buddy. So overall I paid $40 for my Motorola, $40ish for a Bowman headset and $20ish for the PTT. So roughly $100-$120. I paid $40 for a Baofeng UVR and $12 for a hand mic and $10 for an ear-bud line that goes into the mic. So a rough total of $60-$70 and the Baofeng performs much better and has significantly better range.
It's also a hell of a lot more complicated since it has many different mods, channels, power outputs and can do all sorts of whiz-bang stuff. So there's that to bear in mind.

The baofeng is a good radio and you can set it up with a speaker mic and earpiece for less than $50 since the price of the radio has now dropped to only $30 on amazon. My main recommendation would just be to take it apart and rip off the switches for the fm radio and the led flashlight. They are right on the side and can easily be bumped in game. If you will be only running a mic/headset you may also want to consider doing the same thing to the ptt button.

No point in taking it apart.

I've definitely gotten more use of the FM function on my Baofeng than the actual transceiver... even at airsoft events. Maybe that's just me, but I wouldn't recommend disabling it anyway, it's a good way to check your volume and functionality of any earpieces.
