My friend gave me his old Echo 1 SCAR-L, it doesn't shoot. Something is wrong with the gearbox, I tried re-shimming it and haven't had any luck. I'm wondering if you guys know of any good replacement gearboxes that I could buy for it.

Whoa there, you probably don't need to replace the whole gearbox— that's just throwing away money. If you tried reshimming it that means you're at least somewhat comfortable with disassembling the gearbox, right? So I bet you could fix it on your own. With the information you have posted so far, it's basically impossible for us to tell what's wrong with it. Try figuring out what's wrong with it yourself. Read this: forums.airsoftmechanics.com/index.php?topic=6019.0It's short don't worry. If you're still confused then post again with more information (what sound does it make, does it cycle at all, is there an electrical problem?...etc.). Of course, If you did want to replace the gearbox, then any gearbox labeled "Version 2" or "V2" or for a standard M4 (not KWA or ICS) will work. I can basically guarantee you that it will be more expensive to do that than to just buy the replacement part you need though, unless you get a good deal on a used (and hopefully working) complete gearbox. Also, a broken part is a good excuse to upgrade.

Basically, what Snarf said. ^ We need some more information to troubleshoot the problem. Is it making any kind of noise?

Bit be aware, SCAR Ls take a few specific parts that you can usually scrap from the old gearbox, If you do go the route of a completely new one. Such parts are the airnozzle, and a piece that allows for it's ambidextrous function.

Basically, what Snarf said. ^ We need some more information to troubleshoot the problem. Is it making any kind of noise? Here's what's happening. I re shimmed it and was working on getting the anti reversal piece back in there and was having trouble with it. So I figured I'd try without it and at least see if I shimmed it properly. So I put it together without that piece and it fired, but it fired very poorly. It wouldn't shoot a round every time either. So I pulled it apart and finally got the anti reversal piece back in and reassembled the gun. I went to fire it, it pulled the spring inside the gearbox back and then stopped working. The spring was pulled back and the motor would slightly budge and make a faint click sound when initially pulling the trigger. But after that, no sound or movement. I pulled the gun apart, pulled on the anti reversal piece and then the spring released forward. Reassembled the gun, pulled the trigger, and the same thing happened again. The spring had pulled back, but it wouldn't release. At that point I figured I'd start shopping for a new Gearbox because I'd about had it with this one.

That's happened to me before. Usually a fully charged battery will unjam it if you switch it to full auto. Your shim job might be too tight also.

It sounds like your shimming was too tight. Try taking some shims off and then go again.

I'll try messing around with it and see what I can do.

Also try a different battery, It sounds like the one you have dont have the balls to do the job. I also agree that you may have shimmed it too tight or you could have the motor height set too high causing the gears to bind. Before the pistons gets stuck back does it sound the the motor and gearbox are running smooth or does it sound like it is a constant struggle to get the piston back then it jams?

Before the pistons gets stuck back does it sound the the motor and gearbox are running smooth or does it sound like it is a constant struggle to get the piston back then it jams? It doesn't sound like the piston is actually getting stuck or "jammed" back. A teammate of mine had his piston get physically stuck back because the spring guide he had rammed itself inside of it. This doesn't sound like that. He said he pulled the ARL and it released everything, so something is definitely binding on the gears. I doubt it's the battery, as the motor is able to at least compress the spring (the hardest part). It's just not releasing it, which means the sector gear isn't finishing its cycle.

i would definetly try a different battery. Make sure that there is proper motor height as well.
