Thought I would make my first contribution to the site with a mini review of Futureball's airsoft event yesterday (wedged between two paint ball sessions). I am relatively new to the sport (playing a couple of times at Tango Down and now Futureball) so my son can get involved and grow into the sport as well. Hope to make more contributions as we more involved and thanks to the community for all the research material!
As I have read on other threads, the community here doesn't view them as a viable/safe location. Despite the fact it was a pure Rec event with about 200 players, I would agree with the view of many to either avoid or be very wary before playing here. The event was probably 60 players who were noobs, parent drop offs, etc. or infrequent players like myself. Mismatched gear, etc. The rest were more experienced players or players who have the resources to gear up.
Session was 4 hours, but first game didn't get going until 11:30 because the late walk ups, getting all guns chrono'ed, and field orientation. Despite the rules explained, there were a few kids who frequently pulled masks of on the field and were repeatedly yelled at but not removed. Full masks or googles and metal mesh lower mask are a requirement at that field (deal breaker for many players here) even though everyone was chrono under 450 (one major exception coming up). Barrel condoms were required and/or mags out in the dead zone. Too many players not practicing basic firearms safety, so sadly barrel condoms were a necessity.
We went through 4 team Deathmatch games on traditional Lego style barricade fields. Most players called hits, didn't see too much abuse despite a large under 16 crowd. Game 5 was on their nicer field called urban. We played VIP. Game was going well until one player got their goggles shot out. Game was IMMEDIATELY stopped and ref rightfully raged on all players and we all had to go back to the chrono station. The culprit was never found although it was assumed someone snuck away the offending gun.
I was nervous about going back out after that but my son and I went out for one more game at Jungle. That field was the least fun for me because the limited lines of sight. So I called it a day after playing that field.
The general lack of player organization and coordinated attacks made for the larger fields less fun than the smaller fields. Playing here would probably be much better if there was a higher ratio of experienced players to noobs. The staff here is definitely more paintball oriented (one ref even mentioning we should all play a REAL sport like paintball). Also might have been more effective to throw out the players who kept lifting their masks at spawn points on the battlefield instead of repeating to yell at them . It's nice to be able to get my son out and into the sport, but need to be more judicious where we play and the types of players that show up.
