I've recently nearly finished up the externals of a Masada DMR setup, but I haven't decided on one thing.
Should I leave it with the standard 5.56 lower and just use short mags, or swap it over to the 7.62 lower.
I know this lower is suppose to be 7.62x39 instead of 7.62x51 but I just kinda feel it's alittle weird having a so called DMR in 5.56.
So just looking to take the communities opinion on if I should swap or leave it alone.

Personally I feel that all dmr styled guns should be 7.62 based. I personally have a attraction to 7.62 rifles so that's my view. It just looks more realistic, but for this purpose it's your preference.

My bad, added more description. Deuce I feel the same way (then realize I already did it with a SL8). I think in the end I'll swap it (got some ehobbey credit about to expire)unless someone can make a strong arguement to not.Not to mention, I want it to stand out alittle more from my SL8 which is already using the short G36 mags. Besides even if I don't like it, it's not like it's that hard to just simply swap back.

I think Masadas look sexy with a Vn 5.56 mag. Plus the SDM-R is chambered in 5.56 so not every DMR is a 7.62 or has to be for that matter. I'd stay with the 5.56 lower just because of the ease of carrying and buyin mags.

I'd stay with the 5.56 lower just because of the ease of carrying and buyin mags. I agree. On my team, it's mandatory that everyone uses a primary which accepts 5.56mm STANAGS so that we can all share if necessary. It's just easier, and they are far more common that 7.62mm.

Well you guys brought up some good counter points. Still feel I wanna try it out, and between the ehobbey points and airsoft barracks doing a clearance sale on the AKM mags it only cost me 40$ for the lower and 4 magazines. If I try it and hate it I can always just swap back and it won't have hurt the bank too bad.

Definitely give it a shot then, I agree that a rile chambered in 7.62 is better for a DMR then one chambered in 5.56, sure a few 5.56's can pull it off but not all. As for the argument of being on a team where everyone uses 5.56 STANG Magazine Capable platforms it kind of limits your team in an originality sense, but it doesn't really apply to steelfallenangel as he's not on your team. Anyway bottom line is Try it, see if you like it and if not then not much loss.

There are a bunch of platforms that can run 5.56. It won't limit originality at all. You have M4's, SCAR-L, ACR, MTC's, M16's. Plus you have tons of options for magazines.

What did you do to the externals of the rifle? Do you have the 18" barrel, extended handguard and sniper stock? If so, I personally think the 7.62x39 would look out of place. In reality, 7.62x39 doesn't truly have the ballistic properties desired in a DMR. What you can do is just call it an SPR no matter what lower you have; people don't seem to mind what caliber it's based off of if you call it an SPR rather than a DMR.
I'd like to see some pics of your rifle if you could manage to post a few.
Several months ago I ran into a youtube channel from a reporter who filmed live combat footage from Army units in Afghanistan. They were eye-opening videos. While I wasn't watching them to see the rifles they were using, I did notice that the Designated Marksman always had a standard M16A4.

I'm waiting on everything to arrive, and yes it will have a 18' barrel, long handguard, and a PRSII stock. I know that the army still uses modified M16s as it's bread and butter DMR I was just looking to try something different I guess. I may assemble it and just hate the way it looks with the AKM mags. But I may perfer that look if I rearrange parts to run it as a CQB gun again. Since I'm not planning on having this thing spit out a crazy FPS (really shooting for something like 400fps with .25-28s) and focus more on the hopup and barrel. Still gotta get a Wii tech hopup chamber and adjustment dial along side having the barrel rhopped with a m nub combo. The inners that come with these PTS barrels are 6.03s so I don't think I'd see that much of a improvement if I transitioned it to a 6.01.

When it's all done, can we get a picture of it? I don't know if I'm the only one, but I love Masadas and I'm dying to see a picture of this build!

I stuck with 5.56 with my DMR. It was already an M4 platform to start with, but the mags are easier to come by, more brands, etc.
Not to mention, it's airsoft!! Have fun with it! I've seen P90 and MP5 DMR's "just because". In fact, my "DMR" was built off of the "Why not?" concept. I understand most people want realism with airsoft, but I decided I wanted to have a long range, accurate gun that can also shoot a high ROF. So I did it. My "DMR" shoots around 32rps and reaches out to 275' or more. Before the airsoft rule police come out and tell me DMR's have to be set at semi only, the gun isn't used in MIA games... Or in any games in general, too pretty I have nothing else to say. But I do have the means to set it at Semi only just in case.
I to want to see some pictures of this gun. Love a DMR!

Sorry about the crappy depth of field in this shot. Can't take pictures outside since I'm right across from a school and we have no fenced in yard. The AFG and current scope are just place holders. To Do List Bipod Shortdot and mount WII tech hopup chamber and adjustment dial Rhop and M-nub General tune up Experiment with AKM lower
