I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and suggest anything KWA. I know people are going to be like "Oh is proprietary". The truth of the matter is so what. Despite the hate IMO they are incredibly strong runners and perform exceptionally well. It's above your budget but the only thing I ever had break was the hop up and it was my fault. I've never had a single thing break on mine. It's the only gun I use, I've never not run 11.1 Lipo's, the only internal mod I've done is a Promy barrel and an R-hop, and I've owned it since 2010. I've given up on arguing with people and their hate on KWA. I know the real truth and am a happy customer because of it. Maybe I got lucky, but I don't think that is the case.

Being how it is out of his price range, KWA is moot suggestion. Nevertheless, the problem with KWA isn't the proprietary parts. Its that its overpriced for what it is (IMO). KWA's marketing team, fanboys, and many of its users have done a fantastic job in creating a sort of "KWA is best" mentality. For the price your shelling out for a stock KWA, you can get a great gun of a different brand and an accessory or two without the proprietary parts if that truly bothers you. This for the most part though can be said with about every brand out there. Bottom line is, every brand will have both horror stories and worship stories. For instance, my A&K SR25 (a brand that has had a lot of both good and bad rep) is probably the second (if not the best) best shooting replica I have ever owned and all I have done to it is add a R-hop. My point is, you can get the same performance out of a cheaper brand AEG with little to no extra money put into it than you can an expensive (relative on KWA model) AEG. I have owned a KWA M4 and it was good but it will probably be one of the last brands I recommend to a player who is new to the sport or getting back in. I don't hate KWA, I just believe that there are better options out there.
I have no problem helping players out but I have never really liked these "Help me choose a gun" threads as every single person out there will have their own opinion as to what is the best. I'm sure many of you will disagree with my position on KWA but thats the nature of the universe.
More on topic and in an attempt to answer your question based on budget, take a look at D-Boys or Cyma AK's if you don't mind the platform. You can get a metal/steel bodied AK with real wood furniture for like $130 on evike. Leaving you extra cash for magazines.

I disagree, but in the spirit of not taking this way of course I'll leave it at that.
