Helmets?

Ok guys, I'm kind of interested in purchasing a helmet for the purpose of mounting a camera. I'm thinking helmet vs RIS due to the fact that for longer shots I will have to arc and may not even be able to see what's happening on the footage. I'm bowing to the superior wisdom of the forum for recommendations on what to get.

What kind of camera are you planning on using?

A contour. Seems to be less obtrusive than the GoPro.

The reason I use a go pro is because I had a shitty side mounted camera and it always made my helmet tilt to the side the camera was mounted. I never even notice my go pro while I'm playing.

I wouldn't quite call a contour shitty but I see your point x. But that's getting off topic here. I don't even have a cam but I'm between the Go Pro and Contour. I'm looking for a decent helmet with both NVG and side rails. I can look at pictures till I'm blue in the face but it doesn't beat the opinion of someone who has one and can tell me from personal experience.

I run a replica Ops-Core FAST, carbon style, with a side mounted Contour ROAM2. I haven't had any issues with the camera pulling the helmet over to the side with its weight. The contour cameras don't have much weight to them, and the Head-Loc system on the Ops-Core helmets keep it where it should be.

My side camera wasn't a contour. It was an atc3k. I use a protech helmet. The mich helmets look huge on my head and the fast helmet that I tried had uncomfortable pressure points.

I think it definitely all depends on the shape of your head. The Fast replica tasty X is referring to was mine. I don't even notice that I'm wearing a helmet after wearing it for only a few minutes. The pressure points that he mentions, I don't notice at all, hence my previous comment of it depending on the individual's head.

Just make sure you get a helmet that is light enough that you'll actually wear it.
I've invested in several helmets over the years and barely ever wear them since:
1. Wah, it's too heavy for my wee head. 2. Wah, it's too hot out to wear a helmet. 3. Wah, my rhino mount got caught in a tree branch. 4. Wah, wah.
Seriously though, lighter is better. I wore my $30 Protec way more than my $80 real steel MICH.

I wore my $30 Protec way more than my $80 real steel MICH. I couldn't agree more about the weight. My first helmet has never been seen by anyone, except X (he was there when I received the package). That thing weighed a ton! It was a (poor) replica of a MICH 2000 and just putting it on my head for 10 minutes made my neck sore. It also sat way too high up, and did not stay in place for anything. The reason I went with the Fast replica was first due to their lightweight build, and my second reason was due to the dial that lets you size it to your melon, so it stays put.

I can definitely weigh in on the topic of helmets.
Weight can be frustrating but it's not a huge problem in itself. As long as you have a good suspension, weight is easy to tolerate. Yes it can be annoying for your neck - but it's far worse when the helmet rocks around. Same as any other gear - if it's not snugly attached, inertia holds it back when you accelerate in one direction, until it reaches the end of whatever slack is available and then pulls back against you - far more fatiguing than simple one-part acceleration.
This is why I vastly prefer my PASGT replica with an incredible three point setup over a lighter steel M1 or Ssh68 - or even knockoff modern models.
Of course lightening the weight will help as well, but it's not the whole picture. A good bike helmet with suspension will outdo a rifleman's helmet in the comfort department any day. But with all the game time I've spent in a PASGT and an NVA helmet, no complaints.

Thanks for all the help fellas. Weight is not a huge thing to me, years of wearing one helps. Also, Gimpalong can attest to this, I have a rather large melon so something adjustable such as the aforementioned FAST really piques my interest. I'll have to look into it for sure.

I wear an XL Arai and the protech works fine for me, so I wouldn't rule it out.

Ask to try on some helmets at the beginning of an event. I say beginning since at the end it will be sweaty as hell.
