Was reading the forum and somebody mentioned an"iff" patch. Took a look at ebay and evike and it looks like the ones that are available are just regular old patches. Google brought up one article that said they are identification: friend or foe patches, and they glow in the dark. Is this all there is to know or they only visible under certain conditions?

They are typically made from infrared (IR) reflective material that 'glows' when hit with infrared light.
Unless you have NODs or are going for an impression, they're of no real use other than for looks.

...are going for an impression, they're of no real use other than for looks. These are the same thing. Impressions are cool, but they really are just for looks. The top results I see on ebay are not special patches at all; the IFF factor is that you and your buddies can wear the same patch and then you'll recognize each other the real thing is as CQBR says; material that is drab under visible light but much more reflective under IR, and thus easier to see under NODs. I'm not 100% on this, but I believe that such IR glint items are restricted to own - I know that retailers on nametapes and such have notices to that effect.
