This is something that I'd never heard of until just recently, but do you think that bluetooths could sub for a radio system? The time I saw it, a guy with an iPhone conference called a group and set it up that way. Bit seemed to work pretty well for a group of 4. I'm looking for thoughts, if anyone's tried it, etc... And please don't bother commenting if you're going to be a jerk about it...

I did it in a paintball game with a buddy of mine, it worked okay.

I did it once before, about 10 years ago, in a paintball game at Futureball. It wasn't with bluetooth of course, but instead a wired headset. The only problem that we ran into is the fact that you get a lot of heavy breathing going across the phones from everyone that is running. It can be a bit distracting especially if your trying to listen for someone creeping up on you. Other than that, it worked fairly well. It's obviously best if everyone has the same carrier, since calls within that carrier are usually free.

Not a bad idea... Is there any was you could hook it up to a radio and use it as a cordless headset? That'd be pretty cool. And a lot of the more recent Bluetooths are designed in a way to not pick up breathing or background noise, just the person talking.

I'm going to assume you mean a bluetooth headset. I have some motorcycle helmets that have bluetooth communication features for talking to a riding group, but there's a limit of 4 people and it's a huge pain to setup, not to mention a range of about 200 feet maximum, usually less.
I think your main issue is the battery life on the cell phone. On a modern smartphone the actual talk time is pretty abysmal. Another issue is that the durability of smart phones. A lot of people (myself excluded) are afraid of taking their smartphone out on the field. Then you have to have an unlimited minute plan, because being on your phone for 10 hours is going to eat up an entire month's allowance. This could work on a small scale for private games, but for any of the public games you are not going to be able to talk to everyone else. I don't the range advantage of the cell phone outweighs all of the drawbacks.

Allright cool, but we found out that by being all on the same carrier only the person who called the conference gets charged. Due to this we all chipped in about 10 bucks, and it worked pretty well on our 40 acre field. Admittedly, there was a bit of background noise but it worked pretty well... Anyone else going to try this out? And as for durability sake, only 1 person needs a smartphone, a lot of us had sliders that could sync to a Bluetooth and are pretty much indestructible. Hope I sparked some interest.
