Quick AAR, to be followed up with photos and other people's perspectives.
THE BAD:
- After the first mission our squad ran, I had some energy left but was mostly spent. Add the frustration of my goggles fogging and the scenario bogging down at times due to a lack of initiative by other Charlie elements, I was definitely aggravated Saturday afternoon and evening.
- As a squad leader, I was able to keep pretty decent cohesion in the morning. However, everything fell apart in games 2 and 3, partly due to the conditions above. Part of it was our smaller cliques within the squad, part of it was the nature of onesies and twosies getting killed and having to respawn. Next time, if I am allowed to be squad leader again, I will do a better job of keeping us together.
- Fire teams - this could have vastly increased the effectiveness of our squad in certain situations, but something I was not really able to go over before the game. I'm not saying that we did a bad job, I'm just saying we could be even better next time.
- Equipment failures on my part - most of it had to be learned the hard way, like the thermal lens on my ESS goggles fogging uncontrollably, or losing part of the safety on my 1911 due to a lack of coverage/protection with the SERPA I was using. I'm not looking forward to spending more money when I might be getting out of the sport... more to follow.
- COMMO - when I actually used my FRS radio, I could not communicate with the rest of the squad unless I was at least one building away for the most part. Cell phone reception was also virtually non-existent. For the future, we should use higher-grade radios and more powerful frequencies to stay in contact, if people are willing to make that investment.
THE GOOD:
- I can't gush enough about how much ass we kicked in the "special operations" mission. You guys went straight to the frontlines and bypassed all the other dudes who were content to hide behind trailers, and if 1-2 hadn't made that push we probably wouldn't have completed the objective. I guess that also might have tied into how nonchalant I got - we were perfect right out of the box, and then got bogged down.
- As far as chain of command goes - y'all were on your own for key parts of the scenario, but followed the overall plan and listened to leadership even if it wasn't myself.
- Cohesion: everyone got along, and I was glad to have you all on my squad. Thanks for being chill and not being douchebags for the most part, and this also applies to people who don't post on the forums.
OVERALL:
Yes, I did get frustrated Saturday afternoon. This was my first real game since I got back from Iraq, Northern Light doesn't count since I wasn't there to play. As I step back and take an objective look at things, I did have a good time with you guys, and would gladly go again.
SIDENOTE:
If I remember correctly, I might have had my highest number of kills at this game since maybe Northern Wind V four years ago. I'd like to thank Knief's former M4 (though the stock latch fell off) and my G&P ACOG, as well as MUTC's rooftops.
