Thanks for the suggestions tank, but the radio will be staying in its original shell. As you said, trying to take it out would cause more problems than it would solve. The icom f4001 looks like it will fit in the mbitr shell without having to modify the radio itself. The main thing with the project is the real connectors though. I have found SMA to TNC connectors for the icom antenna -> real mbitr antenna (gonna actually be using clone antennas but they use the real connectors and are UHF compatible) and I am working on a u283 -> icom (or kenwood depending on which I choose) adaptor so that on the outside it all looks just like a real mbitr and uses mbitr connections but has the functionality of an icom.
