I'm thinking about getting ALICE gear for my load out. I want to run a fairly light load out because I will be sniping a lot and won't need to carry a lot of gear, and ALICE is pretty low in price. My question is, is ALICE good? Is there anything better for around the same price? What would I need to get to make ALICE gear work great for what I like to do which is snipe?

Alice gear works great if you have an alice compatible belt. I use it and it works awesome for lighter loads. You can move easier.

It really depends on what you need to carry. If you're going light on gear you might not need an ALICE rig or ALICE specific gear. Depending how you like to carry your gear or where you need it on you but mostly depending on how much you need to carry that will change things. If you need to bring things like wraps/vails etc or anything bulky that might take up some space I'd go with a rucksack. You can pack your cloth/netting in there with anything else you need like water or food etc. if you play with that stuff and it will be very soft and double as a rest for your rifle.
Again its mostly going to depend on how much you need on you. If its just one or two mags, I'd just throw a small drop leg or chest rig on and call it. Fabric water, binoculars etc I'd just throw it all in a bag.

I'm going to carry a airsoft knife, some mags, a canteen, and I kinda like the look of Vietnam era load outs. I want all the stuff I would be carrying easily accessible unlike in a bag.

I would say a molle belt with nice suspenders would be a better bet. Then if you ever decide to run a vest you can still use your pouches.

Sounds like a light ALICE setup is right for you. I've got a pistol belt that I believe is ALICE compatible that I could sell you if you're interested and can't find one surplus or whatever.
EDIT: or what Snafu said...always good to run modern as it's readily available...but if you like the old school loadout look ALICE will be perfect to pull it off i'd say.

First off, if you want Vietnam era gear, you should be looking for M1956 Load-Carrying Equipment (LCE) or (if late war) M-1967 Modernized Load-Carrying Equipment (MLCE)
ALICE (All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) gear is rugged, well-built, easily available and cheap.
Despite the fact that I've owned plate carriers, chest rigs, battlebelts and other more modern load bearing equipment, my ALICE gear continues to come out of closet season and after season. That's not to say that I don't wear modern kit, just that ALICE gear will always have a place in my armory because it is so functional and rugged.
I always recommend ALICE gear to new players since it is cheap and easy to find locally. Most surplus shops have nearly everything a person needs to build a complete ALICE loadout for less than $50. I am continually amazed to see beginner players spending lots of cash on CONDOR or cheaply made Chinese replicas. I am also continually amazed when I see new players who have put together solid ALICE loadouts because not only do they look as "legit" and soldier-like as some of the much better equipped players (i.e. AOR1/LBT6094/MICH2000), but they have spent far less.
If you want a cheap loadout that looks the part, it's hard to beat ALICE gear combined with woodland BDUs.
Remember, ALICE generally consists of LC-2 web belt LC-1 Suspenders LC-1 Field dressing (small pouch, sometimes used to hold a compass or other small gear aside from first aid stuff) LC-1 Entrenching tool cover LC-1 ammunition carriers LC-2 Canteen cover and canteen
In addition, these other bits are added or subtracted based on the individual's needs Buttpack M12 Bianchi holster (for M9 or M1911)

Sorry about the necro-post, but another thing that you can add to it is a U.S. Enhanced LBV, like this one: I've found that they have far better weight distribution than LC-1 suspenders, and they also have more padding for heavier loads. I use my ALICE rig with an enhanced LBV as my primary rig, and plan to forever. It is durable, reliable, has lots of space, and can support unbelievably large loads. With the LBV, you get space for six more magazines, as well as two grenades, and it attaches directly to your ALICE-endowed pistol belt. You'll find it is a great, as well as cheap way to improve an already outstanding rig.
