A few weeks back my father approached me about hosting either a milsim or a squad tournament at the Clio Firefighters Homecoming. If you are not familiar with it, its a week long carnival held at the Fireman's Park located on the corner of Saginaw rd. and Wilson rd. in Clio. This is held usually the first week of June. This would be either the Saturday of that week, Sunday or both. Camping would be available with plenty of portal potties and access to running water. Basically what Im trying to do since this is the very front of the planning process is to try to gauge interest and ideas. I've been to a couple milsims so I know how they work, but he is very fond of the idea of a tournament. He has mentioned some of the lay-out options such as using the woods, an open field with structures and cars , and the fire department's 3-story training tower. I assume the price would be either $10-$15 this isn't an idea to make money, just something fun to draw a crowd into the beer tent and carnival. If you have any ideas for planning, scenario, and or critical judgements please post here. Like I said this is the very first stages of planning so I'm very open to judgement and help. Good day. -Coldwave Uploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.us

Can you describe the terrain as it looks like a rather open area of field?

Sounds like it could be a good way to show the public what airsoft is, and isn't. This is taking place during a festival correct? My first concern would be how will you protect the spectators and still allow people to be close enough to watch?

Most of the terrain is a field, thats why there would be quite a few wrecked cars and structures scattered throught the field, but at the northwest corner of the property is about a half an acre of woods. The concern of the safety of the public is a big concern. We were talking about a few options, one being the nets that they string around speedball courses with the fine holes, another would be having barriers set up that would not allow the public within a set distance of the actual game perimeter.

If you're looking for a tournament, i'd personally set up a small squad on squad death match. Since it's speedball sized area by the looks of it, it'd be fast paced, and and put a time limit, and that'd be yourself a hot, high speed game.

Hoogie, its not speedball sized by any means. I know its hard to see by the size of the picture but the field would end up being about a quarter mile+ long by 150+ yards wide.

This sounds like a very fun idea. Where exactly in/around Clio is this field? I can't read the road names on the picture to Google Map it.

Coldwave,
Your best bet for protecting the field is going to be to string up netting around the playing area. It's not going to be cheap, but a simple buffer zone is no good. You have to plan for the worst case scenario, which is somebody standing at the very edge of the field and shooting directly toward the spectators. Even if you say conservatively that the longest an airsoft gun can reach is 100 yards (they can shoot farther, so maybe 150 yards is a safer bet, but let's just say 100 yards for now), then you're talking about creating a 100 yard wide buffer zone between your players and your participants. Not only does this reduce the playing field by 200 yards in each direction (not an insignificant amount), but your spectators will be so far away that they won't be able to see the game play.
You'll need to use the netting to keep your playing area as large as possible and to keep your observers close enough to see anything. I would even suggest you buy some cheap paintball masks and orange vests so you can walk some non-participants through the play area. That way they can see the game up close and personal. Just be sure to keep them out of anybody's direct line of fire.

Yeah, the netting would be the best option, we'd only have to run it down the east side, as nobody would be on the west. Helmet the roads are Saginaw, and Wilson.

But you will want netting to block off the roads. You can't have bbs hitting cars or pedestrians.
