In all fairness, if I were at a game and one dude broke out a foam ax and another a foam light saber, I'd happily watch them go at it. Then I'd keep on playing airsoft with the rest of the guys who showed up to play airsoft.

Damn Bob 'the axe man" from ASGI for starting this trend with Nerf weapons.
However, I don't see the big deal if someone were to use one if used for melee kills when they are too close to shoot the enemy out safely with conventional airsoft guns. But again what would be so great about using a boffer weapon for those melee kills in the first place? A rubber training knife would serve as a much better melee weapon because of its concealment ability. You can hide a training knife under your vest or somewhere else, so if you were to be captured at a mil-sim event you can knife kill your captors after they thought you were disarmed. You just can't do that sort of cloak and dagger move with a giant foam weapon.
Anyway, if you were to use a Nerf weapon just don't go around banzai charging the enemy team, you will just be shot out very quickly. I like to snipe melee idiots way before they can get closer than 100ft. I was doing that out at OP: Fueling the Fire and they just made themselves easy targets.
P.S. Who laughs at people for wearing or using stupid stuff at events anyway. Every time a discussion like this pops up everyone says they will blatantly point and laugh, but I have yet to see it. No one has ever laughed at me in person because of my past shoddy paint jobs. Even when I wore my Saber Fangs to Op: Island thunder no one pointed and laughed. I may have had some jokes thrown at me, but I was joking around too.
People at airsoft events are a lot nicer in person than they are when on the forums.

People at airsoft events are a lot nicer in person than they are when on the forums. It's more like their balls get sucked back into their body and they just talk shit behind the persons back so they won't have to deal with any confrontations, but still get the sick satisfaction of tearing other people down.

I agree completley, it's a terrible idea, but I saw a video of a CQB match where a guy got 3 nerf kills... there was also a guy on the other team with a lightsaber- no joke! they dueled it out...pretty hilarious! DANG IT! I got into the sport too late to see that. Oh well, maybe the force will cause them to cross paths again, and hopefully I'll be there.

Training knifes are most most certainly the way to go. The last OP my training knife got me two kills. It was because the two guys were misinformed, and didn't know our alliance had ended. But I know I would not have crept up on them with a neon yellow foam axe. That is just asking to get shot.

I can maybe see the small axe being kind of like a tomahawk, but one of the full sized swords or battle axes is pretty silly.

Because tomahawks aren't silly or anything...

I know if I got hit in the face by a foam tomahawk, I would be a little pissed.

Would you rather get hit in the face by a training throwing knife? Foam or fiberglass. Take your pick.
I don't think I would ever take a nerf melee weapon onto the airsoft field, I am purely just trying to wrap my head around it.

Just no.
Foam weaponry is a bad idea on a variety of levels.
First off, actual physical contact between players should be discouraged. A foam weapon is not, in all likelihood, going to hurt someone, but, as in all sports, tempers do occasionally flare and someone might take strong exception to getting whacked.
We've all seen those "in the heat of the moment" arguments on the airsoft field and there's no reason to exacerbate these situations by adding in a physical dimension. People might be willing to yell at someone who they think they shot, or at someone who they thought "over shot" them, but they aren't likely to get physical unless that person is in their face. Tapping someone on the shoulder with a hand or lightly tapping them with a rubber knife is different than whacking them with a foam sword. The fact that the foam sword is designed to whack people gives people the idea that they should go about whacking people rather than just tapping them lightly.
Secondly, as others have mentioned, we're at an airsoft event to play airsoft. If you want to LARP, Dagorhir or whatever, go do it at one of those events. There's no place for a medieval battleaxe or longsword on the modern battlefield, so let's keep their foam versions off the airsoft field. If kids want to battle it out in the parking lot fine, fine, but keep it off the field.
Thirdly, this whole foam weapon thing seems to be just another example of the lowering of standards that the airsoft community has become used to accepting. The advent of cheap, clone rifles had lowered the bar for entry to the sport and the resulting influx of newer, younger players has brought a sort of "first-person-shooter" culture based on Call of Duty and other console entertainment. While I am all for cheaper rifles and expanding the sport, I'm tired of seeing younger players treating their rifles like toys, not unloading their rifles in the safe zone and practice poor trigger discipline and I do my best to correct these issues when I see them. In a console game, players don't have to worry about their opponents' physical well being nor do they have to show opponents any sort of respect. These aspects of gamer culture have changed airsoft for the worse and the result is more cheaters and more potential for accidents.
The increasing visibility of foam weapons in airsoft is just a symptom of greater problems that currently afflict the sport.
edit: but, hey, maybe I'm a nasty, stitch-counting elitist.

Although I don't yet play airsoft, I think it would be wiser just to get a replica knife. I know you just want to have fun, but you honestly wouldn't get too far with one of those. They would attract too much attention with their flashy colors. Maybe if you painted it and concealed it, that might work. I wouldn't like someone charging at me with a big 'ol black ax while I'm reloading. Thank you for restating exactly what I just said one post above yours. Gimpalong, you pretty much put the last nail in the coffin with your post. Doing things like this at an airsoft event will only drag our sports' reputation down, and encourage even more irrelevant usage of cheap war toys. Like, soon, kids will show up at airsoft events with nerf guns when they realize nerf axes are okay. Where does it end? Water guns? If you can bring a battle axe to an airsoft event, it doesn't mean you should.

Don't worry, I would definitely pop your cherry then.. Anything nerf at an airsoft game is just out of line, and stupid. I don't care if it's some ridiculous rec game with 6 people in someone's back yard, it's still retarded. I have nothing more to contribute to this ridiculous discussion. How it is even a discussion to begin with, is completely beyond me.
