It had been a long day, both sides having taken astronomical losses, territory changing possession many, many times throughout the conflict. During the lunch hour nearly half of the Immortal army had vanished, consumed by hunger and a need to be somewhere with less conflict.
The Serbian forces were making a final push to overcome the hardened Immortals; Blue issued calm orders: "we've captured their Canto, cover us 'til we're clear." with great resolve
three Serbs: a rifleman, SAW gunner, and a lone sniper geared up for the covering action, expecting it to be their last. The SAW gunner holed up a building 30 yards distant, and prepped mags for quick re-load even as the rifleman set up to cover his right flank. All alone, on the far left of the small village with his two remaining mags, the sniper waited, wondering, "how long will these last?".
Before long the Immortal army arose and marched on the village, determined to destroy all who opposed them in order to retrieve Canto. The gunner opened up with loud clattering, spraying all who stood without cover, even as the rifleman began to pick off the unlucky. The sniper began to observe the fluid efficiency of the Immortals as they began to stretch forward, looking to flank the gunner. As the drama unfolded the sniper began to pick them off, one, two, three, miss, four, they had finally observed the shattered point of their flank, crushed under the blows of an entrenched gunner, and an adequate shooter, both with the determination and resolve to go on 'til the last shell was spent. In minutes the first mag was expelled, and the final mag inserted. Once again ready to unleash death to the unwary, the shooter moved under cover from the gunner from building to building, shooting as time and moment allowed. As minutes passed and no communication was received, it seemed that there would be no respite, save death itself. Finally, with ammo long gone and only a handgun for protection,
the shooter retreated past the church towards the farthest edge of the city, admitting defeat, holding on to the hope that he would hear "Canto captured" before the Immortals found and killed him.
The shooter's end was near; The Immortals had finally flushed the gunner, fatally shooting the valiant rifleman in the effort.
They were getting close and his handgun would never match the firepower of their automatic weapons, clinging to cover he awaited them, hoping again to ambush an unwary Immortal; Never realizing the approach of the "Reaper" on his right; He suddenly felt hot lead scream through his body from abdomen to chest, heard the clatter of automatic fire, and fell to the ground, and finally, finally before his last breath heard the glorious call, "target captured and away".
