Dawn Of A New Age
Operation: Red Dawn, city game.
Late into the day, bullets heard in the distant smoky air run with residue from the earlier bombing raids. The air was hot and humid; no one could predict the outcome of this fight. We had to hold the city or our hope against the Reds would be lost. Our will was strong, but our soldiers were weak and tired.
My squad, Alpha, a team made up of a rag tag group right of the streets. We were no battle hardened soldiers, we weren’t ruthless, but we did have hope. No one knew what to expect from our new foes. Wolverines are ruthless and vicious animals though.
The Reds controlled most of the western forest, this we no control over. They had at least twice our army, and exponentially more training. We set up in three two-man teams, a sniper team and two assault teams. The sniper team was positioned in middle of the town to recon and pick off the stragglers that couldn’t find cover. My assault team was set up on the south side of the city to guard our sector. I hear yells throughout the city, “Enemy, West side!” We were in for a very tough fight.
There assault came were swift, in no time the snipers were being fired on along with the northern assault team. My team retreated to the lower level on the middle building undetected. The bullets don’t pierce the bricks, but they pierced our minds instilling fear in us. Shooting seemed to be endless; no one could predict the breaks in gunfire.
A half hour goes by of shooting; we are holding out, but we don’t know for how long though. The northern assault team is pinned down, all hope seems lost for them, they have moved to a position on the eastern side before the assault. I hear their screams; the Reds show no mercy for them, they are dead. Hatred grows in my heart, nothing seems to matter anymore. We must make a stand and were going to make it now.
The Reds are confining on our position, my team decides to move. The snipers stay in the tower, they knew what was going to happen to them. We breach the door to the outside facing South. It is surprisingly quiet, we move behind a wall as fast as we can. We attract fire almost instantly; the loud pounding sound followed by the crack of another rifle, there is no chance at moving.
As we exchange fire the world closes in as if this fight is the only thing that is happening in the world. Nothing fazes me as I fire, no religion, no mercy, no ranks, no friend, no foe. I see blood poor from gunshots of my enemy, it was seems too unreal. Time goes slow as I see myself outside of my body doing these acts.
We clear the trail leading to the south side of the city. As we move something doesn’t seem right, I get behind cover against the church. My teammate is still on the trail, a crack, blood flows through his hair. No emotion lies on his face, eyes still open he stares at me.
The Reds are even closer to my position now, still standing against the church. I don’t bother to looks south to see him face. Motion, north side, I see a quick jolt run across the alley. I fire with my pistol, blood hits the wall. I got him in the leg I hear his scream as I see one more in the window across. Crack, blood hits the painting behind him, headshot. I run over to the still alive Red, I see only remorse in his face.
I point my muzzle to the wounded Red, I show no mercy. I am tired now; I slowly turn to the south side. Two shots are fired, one from my pistol and one from a rifle. He was standing next to the church as I feel the blood run down my lower ribcage. It’s warm; I make no sound as I drop to my knees. I feel a release of the hatred inside me, a release of my life.
