OK...I'm a rookie to the AirSoft scene and I'm tryin to get myself some gear---but seeing as I am not 18, meaning I still live with my parents, I'm having problems getting one. My dad doesn't mind much, but my mom keeps thinking someone is going to think its a real gun and shoot me. Personally, I laugh at this in my mind. The second thing is she thinks it is too realistic and if I was to get pulled over or something a cop would shoot me or something stupid -- personally, another thing I laugh at.
I want some stuff to use in my argument to get myself an AirSoft, so, have any of you had any problems with the law --- or other citizens --- with your airsoft, thinking they are too realistic? Thnx.

Well,
It all depends, if you do something stupid with these guns, you WILL get shot. Or you will get arrested, or you will get your guns confiscated.
BUT, if you treat them with respect, everything should be ok.
First, you aren't 18 yet, but how old are you?
Second, treat them as real firearms when transporting them in a vehicle. Keep it locked in your trunk, ammo separate, no batteries in. Keep the guns in cases, prefereably locked, police like to see that, it makes them feel safer.
Third, only play at places where you are sure it is safe, this includes private property or a paintball range. Do not play at schools, construction sites, or other people's property without express permission.
Airsoft is a good sport to get into, but you have to use your brain when handling the weapons.

I'm 17. My parents had no problem when it came to buying me a BB gun, when I was 14 or 15, that was removed from the market because police said it was too realistic, but now she is having a fit. In my situation, I drive an SUV, so the trunk is kind of easy to access, but I dont plan on keeping it easy to access --- i'd get a locking case (if I can find one, otherwise just a normal case) for the gun, one for ammo, and my gear in everything else.
I dont plan on walking around downtown with the stuff, only plan on having it out when it is being used in a game, target practice, or modifications/upgrades.
The thing is though, they wont be buying me this, I plan on getting it myself with my own cash that I make from working. She's kind of odd about it...
The only time I have seen someone with an airsoft get shot is when he ran his car in to two parked cars, got out, a cop walked up to him, and the guy pulled his airsoft pistol out of his pocket so the cop shot him....That guy was a 'tard...I dont plan on being stupid like that. Always treat it like a loaded weapon --- even if it is a toy of sorts.

Honestly if you mom doesn’t think it’s a good idea I would personally advise against getting into airsoft. Your parents are the ones who know you best and what your capable or incapable of, not us. Heck, your 17 right? Why not just wait till your 18 and give that ol’ speel that we all have given to our ma and pap before: I’m 18; I can do what I want!
[edit] DRAT! Now I have that song stuck in my head…
*walks away humming ~ 18 and I can do what I want…*

just make sure you're not still living with them when you try that or you may just end up getting yoursefl booted out on your birthday. That's why my brother got an apartment when he was 17 (that and to party with out my parents' knowlege, although the court orders should have clued them in that something was happening).

The problem is they are the ones who got me a BB Gun that was removed from the market because it was too realistic. They also gloat my knowledge of gun saftey because I went through the boy scouts. They let my oldest brother get a paintball gun, my middle brother get a sports car, and im stuck with nothing? Its kind of BS in my opinion -- i'm the most responsible one of my brothers.

try this, sit them down and have a civilized conversation with your parents. no yelling, swearing, etc. That goes for both you and them. Find out what their concerns are and tell them why they they don't have to worry about things like that. don't just assure them, but give the real reasons, or set precident. Most importantly, don't whine, and don't bug the hell out of them non-stop. parents hate both and it displays even more immaturity, resulting in them wanting you to have an airsoft gun even less than before. The key is, talk to them, not yell or whine, talk. If you have to make some compromises, like, it must be kept in their room locked in a gun case until you go to an event, then compromise. you get your gun and they get their warm and fuzzy feeling that you don't have a realistic looking gun in your hands.

When my dad gives me one of those looks when I'm in all my gear at home stroking my gun, I say:
"Hey, this hobby's keepin' me out of trouble. Would you rather I spent my free time doing drugs and getting trashed all the time?"
So he figures, yeah, it's a littled weird, but I'd rather have him doing this than something a lot worse.

TeMpEsT has it right. Tell them that $300 is a hell of a lot of pot, or an airsoft gun that at least gets you outside and gets you some exercise. That's what I told my parents when I got into paintball at 15 and that worked pretty well. Letting them know you're going to be treating the 'soft guns like real ones in terms of transportation (Any good gun case should either have locks built into the latches, or at least holes where you can attach pad locks), and letting them know that when it is out, you don't plan on it being able to be seen from the street might be a good idea.
The bottom line of the sport is that, yes, it's fairly controversial and seen as dangerous. However, I'm sure the stats for paintball might apply closely to airsoft in that, you're more likely to be injured playing golf or bowling.

there's a state law that says that you can walk around in your house with a weapon all you want and noone can do a goddamn thing about it.. (Noone meaning people on the street who might see you through a window or somesuch) i dunno about that injury thing, Jacko... we've had a few busted up guys from falls and tripping... beware the evil wire...
