Yeah Newman, holding those weapons is a great feeling... Shooting them is even better ... ;D
The first time I ever rock-n-rolled a MP-5.... WOW.....
Incredible....
Just like the arm ripping feelilng of double-tapping a G3... YES....!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmm, I just pulled my M4 out again... It is definately black, no doubt about it, but I have to say. I would almost call it 'frosted'.... Cause of the fuzzy coating.... hmmmmmmmmm.....

Garand's and Carbines are a blast to shoot. just soooo worthwhile to blow through 8 rounds of .30 ammo....then have the clip pop up with a clang.... and a Carbine...feels just like shooting a pistol...the gun is just so light, i can shoot it one handed.

True Colors. Here is a photo of my AR-15 carbine, for color comparison to Marui's or custom paint jobs. It actually is greyish black, kind of hard to explain Vitalis's "Fuzzy" is a good description, The black Phosphate coating process has a black color, but it is very matte (non-reflective) hence the grey hue. also check out www.wolverinetactical.com/varm1.jpg that one has a brand new bushmaster lower on it and you can see the grey phosphate coating (even in that crappy pic) which will eventually "buff" more to a grey/black with use. Hope that helps.. 8)

I think mine may be a bit darker then yours, but not by much. The lightness could just be from the flash in your picture...
Mine is a Bushmaster lower mated to a Wilson Heavy Barrel upper... There is even a slight color difference between them.
Then of course, the barrel is a slightly different color too, I think because of the heat it takes. So, lots of different shades make up my weapon, and none of them are a true black. Going with a posphate coating is the only way I think the color could ever be properly matched.

Hrm, I think that Mike's "sporter" isn't the same color as the real-steel M4. I remember a really...black...color to the one I held, not grey at all.
Different heating and painting processes, I'm assuming.

Newman,
When it comes down to it, there is no difference at all between a "sporter" and an M4.
M4 is the military designation for the collapsable stock, medium length barrel, short foregrip, removable carry handle M-16A2.
Several contractors supply weapons to the military, not just Colt. In fact, I am one of those that would rather NOT carry a Colt. I prefer Bushmaster. Heck there are a ton of military firearms that are not even made in the U.S.
The receivers are pretty much the same, with the exeption of the removable carry handle. All the internals are the same. Barrel length and foregrip are the only real difference.
And if you were looking at a Cop M4, who KNOWS where they got that weapon... Bushmaster, Colt, Oly... they are all suppliers to the cops.

I have nothing else to say, I just said "isn't the same color".
Upper and lower receivers would vary between manufacturers, am I correct? Couldn't the M4 (made by Colt) be a different color than the AR-15 you're toting?
I went to Colt.com and found out this:
Finish: Black anodized receiver; black oxide barrel
Does that help at all? I'm not sure if that tells you what process they use (probably not), but it says... "black". Hehehehe.

The AR-15 is basically the M4, except its not Automatic, although the AR can be converted pretty easy. From my experience, I say that the gunmetal color is the actual color. The ones that the SRT uses are grey, the PPR's I've seen are grey, and most AR-15's like Mikes, are grey.
The differing colors can mean a few different things, different manufactures, couldnt have been painted, replaced, you name it

Having considered buying a preban AR, to eventually convert into a carbine, I have a lot of research under my belt. I know that a genuine Colt receiver differs considerably in both material and color from an Olympic Arms - etc.
I'd much rather have my Marui's receiver flat black than bright grey, that's for sure. 8)

Yikes!! I spawned a whole new thread (Oops) My pre-ban carbine (sporter) is original, and made a lot earlier than the M4.(hence, Pre-ban....) There have been some changes in the coating procedures, from then to today. some of the AR's I have owned were more black than this one, and some were greyer, just depends....... I am with vitalis on the bushmaster preference, but when I had option on the colt pre-ban I took it. also note its 7.62x39 cal stamped on the lower, kinda nice that I could actually (ethically, because of caliber) hunt deer with it. I also have a 16" M4 style upper for it in .223......ah the wonderful, versatile, AR..... *strokes pre-ban carbine*

I THOUGHT I saw 7.62x39 stamped on that upper. Very nice being able to shoot the AK round!!! I have been thinking about picking up the same upper for my Bushy. As for the colors, yeah, they vary from weapon to weapon, different production series, etc... The only ones that I have seen totally black though were original Vietnam issue M-16s, and the collectors rifles that have all the white lettering. Mine is pretty darned black though too. Either way, Newman, you did a great job in painting yours. Looks real good. Just please, don't ever color in the Colt lettering in white... Vitalis
