Let's think about a situation where you hit someone that is riding a motorcycle. Now let's say that if they were wearing a helmet they would have lived, but instead they were dumb and didn't. So now they are dead and you are going to be screwed up the rest of your life, thinking about how you hit and killed someone. Not to mention, it takes an accident, and turns it into something much more serrious for you, legally.
I think it's just plain stupid that you have to have a law in order to get people to wear a helmet. How stupid can you be?

Even though most helmets only help in a crash at about 15 mph you need to wear one. Any responsible rider will tell you how dumb this is. All this opens the door to is 18-24 year old guys trying to look sweet and impress people, there will not be a single responsible person doing this.

Oh I didn't read the article. Wow... Actually my insurance went down this year (I renew end of this month). I don't think the rates are going to sky rocket any time soon at least.

Meh, it won't change my riding style. I'll still wear jeans, gloves a leather jacket and my helmet.

If someone wants to ride without their helmets, that's their choice as always. Only thing I don't want to see is that if someone without their helmet is at fault for something, and gets injured, don't blame the others for your plain stupidity. Obviously you don't care about your health if your going to ride without the helmet. Now, I don't currently own a cycle of any kind, but in the future I would love to aquire one, and I'll be damned if your gonna catch me without a helmet, even if everyone else out there is without one. My health is more important to me than a reputation.

A)Many choices we(you) all make can lead to death/injury. B)Motorcycle riders are required to have more coverage. C) Thor already said it D)Darwinism @Tank=people need to me more aware and watch for bikers. Regardless of the law.
@BM5=Ive ridden in other states that dont require helmets and i must say many older people dont wear them so it may be an unfair assumption. Me, my mom, stepdad, and friends all survived many miles.

If you can't change what other people do, do as much as you can to protect yourself from their lack of awareness/stupidity.
It all works itself out in the end.

I've been on a bike since I was seventeen and am 37 now. I have ridden in states where you don't have to wear one and have rode without my helmet many times.
I have been told a helmet is worthless after 35 miles an hour by manufacturers and dealers alike. I will wear on on long rode trips but putting around town I will not.
To do so in Michigan you have to carry 20,000.00 insurance and have a two year old endorcement and be over 21.
I believe Thors statement to be very close to how I feel. The government babysits enough of my choices. If I ride and end up in a accident it will be because some ass hole kid is texting when he runs me off the rode. NOT because I was ridding like a idiot.
Every one is I intitled to their opinion. But don't encroach on my freedoms because your ok with giving up all your freedoms like a lamb to be lead to slaughter.
Good luck on all that.

I don't understand why you would wear your helmet on long trips and not around town. That seems totally contradictory to the 35 mph rule. Which I would like to see evidence on.

According to that study a helmet will save your life in 39% of "fatal" crashes.
EDIT: If you feel that it's an acceptable risk for the enjoyment of not wearing a helmet then by all means go ahead. Personally I don't see any reason not to wear a helmet. Keeps bugs and wind off of my face, it keeps my face slightly warmer in colder weather. Tinted visor makes it so I don't have to wear sunglasses. It's only a little less comfortable than not wearing one and increases my chance of surviving. Even if it did only work up to 35 MPH like you say I would still rather wear one than not.
I realize that it should be your choice to make that decision so long as it does not affect my ability to ride or any of my rights. As such my original post was quite the ill thought initial reaction.

Each to their own reasoning. This is one of those points that everyone could argue till their blue in the face, and neither side will change their opinion.
Those that are for helmets, want to help keep those that don't want to wear them, safe. Those that don't want to wear them, want to be left alone, with their decision.
I will add that I did see a guy going down the road today without one, and it was a weird sight. Funny, it hasn't been required by law for that long, but I've really gotten use to seeing them. It was quite weird.

If it is about choice then why are we required to wear our seatbelt when in a car, but not required to wear a helmet. I don't see the joy in not wearing one even if you are doing simply because you can. I know I will always be wearing mine.

I am kind of waiting to hear the battle cry of everyone getting the seatbelt law repealed. I know that it's just a matter of time. I however have seen the impact studies, first hand, that GM did on just a 5 mile per hour accident, and the results on your legs when they go smashing into the dash. Lets just say that the bones in your legs shatter. I use to work at the GM tech center.
