here are some pics from the pit ,these are older now they have cement blocks making up a firing line .id say its over a hundred yards to the back hill.Just be real careful about cease fires that everyone knows and stops shooting . http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v404/wargy/ak%20forum%20shoot/
Wow, there's so much crap shot up out there, it's no wonder the DNR stepped in.
Psh, you should see it NOW (or at least how it was before the DNR stepped in). It was ridiculous. I'm glad they're doing something about it to be honest. There was more trash than dirt.

In general, I'm not a fan of the DNR and their regulations that they enact. I also can attest that shooting random things up is a lot of fun, but without some form of enforcement, forcing people to clean up their mess, I unfortunately have to agree with their decision in this case.
I can only imagine how much more crap was laying around before they stepped in, like you said. On the other hand, that back stop is probably more lead, than dirt, by now.

Looking at the range pic I'm thinking I should buy more 00 buckshot to shoot due to the distance instead of clay/game load to shoot am I on the right track?

Just buy more regardless. More is better at the Pit.

I don't recall, does you're shotgun have a field barrel? If so, I know it's not supposed to be the best idea to shoot 00 buck through my field barrel. That's what the security barrel is for. Yours may be different than mine though, from what I remember you bought a Remington. I have a Mossberg.

If this was a couple weeks later I could bring a clay thrower, I have one up north and I will be up there the following weekend. It's one of the spring loaded ones that you spike into the ground, or attach to a spare tire.
If we plan to do another one of these days later in the year, I could bring my thrower home.

I'll bring it home with me then. I don't really like to use it up north because I don't know how far out the rounds are leathal, and the only open area large enough is in the national forest, so I have no control over the down range.

What is a field barrel? My shotgun is 28" smooth barrel and I have a modified choke and another is improved cylinder choke.
Not even sure if my barrel can shoot slug or not so I'm not gonna bother to buy slug shot, now the question is for the range at the pit do I go for 2 3/4" 00 buckshot or some 3.5" turkey shot? Buying ammo tommorrow so a fast response by tommorrow's afternoon will be good. If I need different choke let me know as I can buy more tommorrow. I'm really super newbie when come to real steel.

That is a field barrel. DO NOT SHOOT SLUG IN IT! Also, you don't want to shoot 00 Buck through those chokes. I believe that they make a full open choke (basically just covers the threads so they don't get dammaged), that you might be able to get away with shooting 00 Buck through
Edit: I'll have better information for you in about 15 min on the 00 Buck and Chokes. I'm going to confirm, won't take long.

OK I'm wrong. Just looked again in my manual, you only have to worry about shooting slug and 00 Buck in a Extra-Full choke tube. The others are fine. Improved Cylinder choke tube they say produces the best accuracy with slug (in the Mossberg 500).
3.5" shells are for beating up your friends' shoulders.
